Position summary

Reporting to the Drill & Blast Supervisor, this position supports safe and efficient blasting activities. The role is hands-on and involves loading and initiating blast holes, checking compliance with site rules and legal obligations, and helping ensure blasting work is completed safely and effectively. You will also assist with monitoring the mining environment and inspecting areas before and after drilling and blasting to maintain safety standards.

Key duties

  • Carry out blasting work according to approved blast designs and site plans.
  • Handle, move, store, and prepare explosives and detonators in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare blast holes, load explosives, connect initiation systems, and carry out controlled firing.
  • Complete safety checks before blasting, including clearing and securing the blast zone and advising relevant personnel.
  • Review blast results, evaluate performance, and document outcomes.
  • Keep accurate records such as blast logs, explosive usage details, and incident reports.
  • Follow all site safety rules, legislation, and environmental obligations.
  • Inspect and maintain blasting equipment on a regular basis.
  • Take part in safety meetings, training sessions, and blasting-related audits.
  • Work with mining engineers and technical services staff to improve blast design and sequencing.
  • Support the development of junior shotfirers and new team members through mentoring and training.

About you

The ideal candidate is safety-minded, focused on operational quality, and works well with others. You should be comfortable in demanding conditions, highly accurate, and detail-oriented.

Essential qualifications and experience

  • Supervisor authorisation.
  • Relevant qualification RIIBLA201E – Support Shotfiring operations under the Explosives Act 1999.
  • Previous experience as a support shotfirer in mining or quarrying.
  • Strong understanding of explosives, blasting methods, and safety rules.

Desirable experience

  • Exposure to electronic initiation systems and blast design software.
  • Capability in emergency response and first aid beyond basic certification.

Location and lifestyle

This role can suit someone living locally or using the onsite accommodation village. Hail Creek Open Cut is about one hour from Mackay and offers access to the Whitsunday region, including Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. The workforce includes people commuting from across Queensland, including Mackay, Rockhampton, and Townsville.
