Job description

Overview

Napier City Council invites engineering students to apply for a hands-on summer internship opportunity within the Water Services team. This role offers the chance to actively engage with the city's water, wastewater, and stormwater systems, gaining insight into infrastructure management and planning processes that influence decision-making.

Role Highlights

The internship combines practical field activities, investigative research, and project involvement, tailored to your skills and interests. It involves collaboration with operations personnel and experienced engineers, providing guidance as you experience how projects advance from initial analyses to actionable recommendations.

Potential Responsibilities

  • Assist operations teams with field tasks such as water meter reading, conducting network inspections, and supporting maintenance operations.
  • Analyze and review pipeline inspection data to evaluate asset conditions, aiding maintenance planning and replacement prioritization.
  • Support environmental assessments related to stormwater catchments, connecting land use and water quality through reporting and data review.
  • Evaluate asset documentation, manage data, and prepare maps, reports, and summaries that inform engineering and operational choices.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance internal tools and digital processes, potentially exploring engineering software applications aligned with your skill set.

Candidate Profile

  • Currently pursuing a degree in civil, environmental, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for water infrastructure, engineering investigations, or asset management.
  • Capable of working with data—detecting patterns, verifying details, and clearly communicating findings.
  • Possesses strong written and oral communication skills, showing initiative to seek clarification when required.
  • Exhibits organization and persistence in managing tasks to completion.
  • Maintains a positive mindset towards both office work and on-site field duties.

Familiarity with Microsoft Excel is beneficial. Experience or coursework involving GIS, CAD, or water management systems is advantageous but not mandatory, as the internship is intended for learning and skill development.

Benefits and Work Conditions

  • Access to an Employee Assistance Program (OCP)
  • Recognition through quarterly values awards and social club activities
  • Annual free flu vaccinations
  • Cultural development opportunities including Ka Awatea Cultural Wānanga and NCC Kapa Haka
  • Te Reo Māori language classes

This fixed-term position lasts three months, requiring part-time commitment of approximately 20 hours weekly across weekdays. The location is in Napier with potential work across various office sites.

The annualized salary aligns between $54,360 and $60,756 pro rata, inclusive of KiwiSaver contributions.
