Role Overview
This senior role involves leading backend development for systems interfacing with machine learning models, building core applications and services, delivering new AI features, and enhancing infrastructure and services across various teams: the Maker Team (automation engine creation), the Miner Team (ML-supported data labelling and segmentation), and the Data Intelligence Team (scalable data pipelines with privacy focus). The position includes shaping technical direction, architecture, processes, and mentoring within the Python Chapter.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop resilient Python backend applications integrating with service architectures
- Enhance developer experience through mentorship and promoting clear, testable code
- Build observability for ML and GenAI/LLM apps using Grafana stack components like Prometheus, Loki, and Tempo
- Create integrations and services interacting with Google Cloud services
- Collaborate closely with Data Scientists and ML Engineers during model productionisation
- Respond to incidents affecting ML applications, including resource usage troubleshooting
- Document knowledge and support team growth through mentoring and pairing
- Contribute to recruitment and onboarding and manage projects end-to-end as the team scales
Candidate Profile
- Minimum eight years of software engineering experience, including leadership roles at Lead, Staff, or Principal level
- Expertise in Python and backend engineering
- Strong background in asynchronous and concurrent programming
- Experience managing entire projects from requirements to deployment and monitoring
- Proficiency with maintainable test development
- Skilled in observability and distributed tracing techniques
- Knowledge of performance tuning and memory management best practices
- Proven mentoring ability in software development methods and patterns
- A proactive learner focused on process improvements and technical debt reduction
- Excellent English communication skills, capable of explaining complex concepts and trade-offs
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience as an early or founding member of an engineering team
- Work experience in fast-scaling startup environments focusing on rapid and iterative value delivery
- Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
