Job description

About Harness

Harness is a pioneering AI software delivery platform founded by Jyoti Bansal, the technologist who created AppDynamics. It has secured around $570 million in funding and valued at $5.5 billion, with major investors such as Goldman Sachs and Menlo Ventures. Leveraging AI to automate the activities following code creation—like testing, deployment, security, compliance, and cost management—Harness assists teams in shipping software more quickly while maintaining security and governance throughout the entire software delivery lifecycle.

Our platform utilizes Harness AI alongside the Software Delivery Knowledge Graph to embed contextual intelligence and automation with governance and policy controls at every stage. Harness has supported over 185 million deployments, 82 million builds, and $2.8 billion in cloud spending, enabling significant improvements in release speed, cost saving, and operational efficiency for clients like United Airlines and Choice Hotels.

Role Overview

You will join the Feature Management & Experimentation (FME) team, which operates one of the world's most demanding distributed systems, evaluating 4 trillion feature flags annually with millisecond latency globally. Your work will involve designing and maintaining large-scale distributed microservices, optimizing system performance, and ensuring enterprise-grade reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement scalable, distributed backend services primarily using Java and Golang.
  • Architect, maintain, and enhance microservices-based systems.
  • Create robust APIs and internal platform services using REST frameworks such as gorilla.mux and middleware like alice, as well as gRPC.
  • Optimize performance across computing, memory, storage, and network layers.
  • Manage data solutions with PostgreSQL (including pgx driver), Redis, and S3 object storage.
  • Deploy and oversee cloud-native applications on AWS, utilizing Docker and Kubernetes orchestration.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex production and infrastructure issues.
  • Champion best engineering practices, ensuring high code quality and system reliability.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering leadership.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver highly available and scalable solutions.

Candidate Profile

  • 8 to 11 years of professional software engineering experience proficient in Go, Java, and C++.
  • Strong grasp of core computer science concepts including algorithms, data structures, concurrency, memory management, processor architecture, containers, cgroups, and filesystems.
  • Demonstrated experience in designing scalable distributed systems and microservices architectures.
  • Proficiency with PostgreSQL, Redis, and object storage mechanisms like S3.
  • Experience working within AWS cloud environments including core concepts such as VPCs, load balancers, auto scaling, and compute instances; exposure to Azure or GCP is advantageous.
  • Hands-on experience developing and running cloud-native applications using Docker, Docker Compose, Kubernetes, and related orchestration tools.
  • Strong understanding of API development and communication patterns with REST APIs, gRPC, and relevant middleware.
  • Experienced with Git development workflows and modern software delivery methodologies.
  • Excellent debugging and problem-solving skills that extend beyond application code to infrastructure and networking.
  • Effective communicator comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven leadership skills mentoring engineers, leading discussions, and managing cross-team initiatives.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Prior experience drafting security policies for API gateways or load balancers.
  • Contributions to open-source software projects.

Employee Benefits

  • Opportunity to build transformative products from end to end.
  • Competitive salary packages.
  • Comprehensive healthcare benefits.
  • Flexible work hours.
  • Paid time off and parental leave.
  • Regular social and team-building events monthly, quarterly, and annually.
  • Monthly internet connectivity reimbursement.
