Role Overview

The Staff Software Developer for Essentials is pivotal in ensuring high-performance, scalable, and reliable statistical computations on datasets comprising hundreds of thousands of records. You will enhance and optimize complex workflows involving ingestion, validation, modeling, and reporting. The role also includes developing tooling to enable AI agents to execute these workflows reliably, maintaining correctness and trustworthiness.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and optimize workflows performing complex mathematical and statistical computations on large datasets with scalability for future growth.
• Manage end-to-end performance aspects, including database optimization, batching, parallel processing, memory management, and caching strategies using technologies like Postgres and Redis.
• Ensure verifiable accuracy in computations, maintaining output correctness.
• Implement dependable orchestration and scaling solutions using message queues, job scheduling, and workflow orchestration, designing for resilience against partial failures.
• Create observability tools that enable diagnosis of delays and errors within multi-stage pipelines.
• Build and maintain agent tooling for data validation, analysis configuration, exception management, report generation, and other automation tasks requiring human oversight.
• Design harnesses to ensure AI agent outputs are reliable and undergo appropriate verification and human review.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation and project context to support agent productivity and continuous improvement of agentic development workflows.
• Collaborate with engineering leadership to establish and uphold standards for testing, performance, and agentic development.
• Enhance the testing framework for complex service architectures, focusing on integration and end-to-end coverage.
• Mentor peers through design, pairing, and code review to elevate team performance.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum 8 years of professional experience as a high-impact software engineer with deep expertise in distributed, service-oriented architectures.
• Proven track record of enhancing system performance and scalability in large data or statistical computation environments.
• Hands-on experience with orchestration frameworks, message queues, and workflow management.
• Strong proficiency across multiple technologies including Python, Go, Node.js/JavaScript, TypeScript, React, PostgreSQL, Firebase, and Redis; flexible and quick to learn across stacks.
• Expertise in end-to-end and integration testing for service-based systems using tools like Playwright or Cypress.
• Advanced AI agent development skills, including daily use, tuning, and building trust-enabling harnesses for reliable outputs.
• Ability to autonomously navigate complex, ambiguous problems and deliver impactful solutions.
• Effective collaboration skills across technical and non-technical teams, with clear communication of technical constraints in business terms.
• Commitment to security, privacy, and compliance when handling sensitive data.
• Positive, humble attitude with strong partnership orientation and resilience in stressful environments.
• Willingness to engage in remote-first work culture intentionally to foster meaningful team relationships.
• Must reside in Calgary and have full legal authorization to work in Alberta without visa sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building AI systems including large language model applications and agent frameworks.
• Background in statistics or quantitative analysis, particularly regression modeling.
• Experience in environments demanding non-negotiable correctness and high data integrity.
• Skilled in navigating and improving large complex codebases.

• First month: Learn the Essentials platform, workflows, stack, and agentic practices. Deliver meaningful improvements and produce an assessment of key risks and agent integration opportunities.
• By three months: Take ownership of performance and scalability issues end to end, achieve measurable improvements, initiate agent harnesses with evaluation and review processes.
• By six months: Lead architecture improvements for scalability, establish team standards for testing and performance, lead cross-team initiatives on AI agent integration and mentor others.
