Job description
About the Role
Vantage is seeking a Staff Engineer to shape and drive the technical strategy across multiple teams. This role involves direct implementation as well as broad technical leadership responsibilities.
As a Staff Engineer, you will own the technical roadmap that spans several teams, ensuring successful delivery. You will influence both peers and senior leadership for alignment and support. Your role includes resolving cross-team dependencies proactively to avoid delays, and developing frameworks and processes that allow teams to stay coordinated without constant oversight.
You will maintain a hands-on approach, simultaneously leading several major initiatives. Your expertise will cover the entire technology stack from frontend to data systems, enabling you to set service level agreements (SLAs) and observability standards. You will manage technical debt strategically, balancing immediate shipping needs with long-term architectural integrity.
Additionally, you will elevate the engineering team by providing mentorship, overseeing design reviews, and engaging in coding partnerships.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead the design and execution of multiple key technical projects concurrently, remaining actively involved in coding and architectural decisions.
- Offer technical guidance that harmonizes short-term deliverables with sustainable system architecture, ensuring consistency across teams.
- Take ownership of technical debt management by identifying, quantifying, and prioritizing debt, substantiating its business and developer experience impacts, and collaborating with product teams to embed its resolution into quarterly goals.
- Promote best practices and alignment through initiatives such as Architecture Office Hours, internal presentations, and maintaining documentation for team-wide knowledge sharing.
- Mentor engineers at various levels, including senior staff, by fostering architectural thinking beyond code contributions and collaborating with management to promote growth opportunities.
- Serve as a quality gatekeeper by engaging in code reviews and shaping testing strategies, while empowering other engineers to develop reviewing proficiency and ownership.
Candidate Requirements
- A minimum of 9 years' professional experience demonstrating strong abilities in software development, testing, design, and architectural leadership.
- Comprehensive expertise in a full production technology stack including frontend, backend, infrastructure, and data layers with the ability to understand and design systems holistically.
- Proven experience crafting and leading a technical roadmap spanning multiple teams over multiple quarters, gaining buy-in from technical peers and leadership.
- Experience in managing technical debt as a dedicated program—quantifying it, prioritizing it, advocating its importance to leadership, and including it alongside product initiatives.
- Background in designing and maintaining B2B API integrations including aspects such as authentication, rate limiting, retries, idempotency, versioning, and contract evolution.
- A strong history of mentoring senior engineers in architectural concepts beyond routine code reviews.
- Hands-on experience with continuous integration tooling, Docker, and major cloud platforms like Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Insight into the evaluation and introduction of developer tools—including AI-enhanced development utilities—balancing their productivity gains against potential risks to code quality, review discipline, and data management.
- Deep proficiency in Python and Django used in production service environments.
- A degree in Computer Science or an equivalent discipline.
