Staff Backend Product Engineer, Operations Technology

About the Role

HelloFresh is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join the Ingredient to Product tribe, focusing on the intersection of Food Systems and Backend Engineering. This role is a key individual contributor position responsible for bridging technical and business needs, converting requirements into scalable production solutions that enhance menu operational efficiency.

You will collaborate extensively across squads in the Food Systems alliance, working closely with Backend Engineers to elevate the technical standards and expedite value delivery to customers.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and manage reliable, scalable infrastructure supporting menu operations, playing a pivotal role in the successful xPS migration in the US market.
• Serve as the technical liaison between Food Systems business leaders and Backend Engineering teams, translating business needs into effective engineering solutions.
• Lead backend-centric product challenges by designing, building, and maintaining services and systems that perform reliably at scale.
• Extend beyond your core expertise when required to solve problems effectively, using your specialization as an anchor rather than a limit.
• Maintain full ownership of your work, including instrumentation, monitoring, and ongoing system improvements in production. Recognize shipping as the start of continuous learning and enhancement.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Extensive hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot, demonstrating practical knowledge of how input context affects AI output and how to manage AI-generated content boundaries.
• High proficiency in Python with strong capabilities in building distributed systems in production environments, including event-driven and asynchronous workflows, clear service contracts, and designing for partial system failures. Experience operating these systems with observability and data management skills.
• A product-oriented mindset with strong opinions on what should be developed and robust ability to justify decisions through data and user feedback.
• Demonstrated ownership mentality, bias towards shipping features, and commitment to delivering the complete solution including finishing details.

Work Arrangement

HelloFresh promotes a Flexible Hybrid work approach allowing employees to balance remote work with office presence. Typically, this involves a minimum of two days per week in the Toronto office, with most teams gathering two to three days weekly.

Compensation

The salary range for this role is CAD 180,000 to 215,000 annually.
