Staff Backend Engineer - Customer Value Optimization

About the Role

We are seeking a Staff Backend Engineer to join the Customer Value Optimization (CVO) tribe at HelloFresh. This impactful role operates at the crossroads of Data Science and Backend Engineering, serving as a critical link to transform machine learning models into dependable, scalable production systems. Collaborating across squads within the CVO tribe, you will work closely with Data Scientists and Backend Engineers to establish scalable ML model serving solutions, elevate technical standards, and speed up value delivery for customers.

The CVO tribe's mission is to dramatically enhance HelloFresh Group's growth performance through optimized pricing, tailored benefits, and accurate customer value predictions—empowering data-driven marketing and product decisions for better returns.

Key Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and maintain resilient, scalable infrastructure that supports real-time serving of ML models in production.
• Serve as the technical liaison bridging Data Science and Backend Engineering teams within the tribe—translating data science requirements into practical engineering implementations.
• Establish and promote best practices for model serving, API design, and system architecture across multiple squads.
• Lead technical initiatives that span squads, ranging from high-level architecture choices to direct hands-on coding.
• Collaborate with Data Scientists to ensure ML models deployed in production are efficient, observable, and maintainable.
• Contribute to engineering guidelines and play an active role in defining the tribe’s technical roadmap.
• Provide mentorship and support to engineers across squads without formal managerial duties.

Candidate Profile

• Minimum seven years of backend engineering experience, with strong expertise in Python.
• Demonstrated ability to build and manage production systems for ML model serving or ML platforms.
• In-depth knowledge of distributed systems, API design, and microservices architecture.
• Proven success in collaborating across team boundaries to deliver complex, cross-functional projects.
• Excellent communicator comfortable working alongside Data Scientists, Machine Learning Engineers, and Data Engineers.
• Collaborative mindset with humility and sound technical judgment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with machine learning frameworks and serving tools.
• Familiarity with feature stores, model registry systems, or MLOps tooling.
• Background in e-commerce, subscription services, or personalization fields.

Compensation

Salary range: $182,000 to $215,000 CAD annually.
