Job description
About AirTrunk
AirTrunk is the leading innovator in hyperscale data centres across Asia Pacific and the Middle East regions. Our mission is to support the exponential growth of the region’s digital landscape by delivering sustainable, cutting-edge infrastructure for some of the world’s most transformative companies. Since launching Australia’s first largest hyperscale data centres in 2017, we continue expanding with investor backing, including from Blackstone.
Role Overview
As a Staff AI & Data Engineer, you will spearhead the creation and advancement of intelligent data and AI systems that fuel AirTrunk’s next-generation platforms. This position combines expertise in data engineering, AI, platform architecture, and DevOps to craft scalable, secure, and production-ready solutions enhancing operational efficiency, sustainability, and smarter decision-making across our data centre operations and businesses. You will set technical direction, develop engineering benchmarks, and guide platform designs while mentoring the team and leading complex initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable AI and machine learning solutions to improve operations like predictive maintenance, process optimization, automation, and enhanced decision support.
- Architect multi-agent AI systems, including retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and Model Context Protocol (MCP) implementations for adaptive enterprise-grade applications.
- Integrate large language models (LLM) and generative AI technologies into enterprise workflows and platforms using tools such as Databricks, OpenAI, Anthropic, and LangChain.
- Establish reusable engineering standards and guardrails to ensure AI applications are secure, reliable, maintainable, and scalable in production environments.
- Lead development and optimisation of robust batch and streaming data pipelines supporting analytics, operational processes, and AI workloads at scale.
- Manage medallion architecture standards within Databricks Unity Catalog, promoting trusted, governed datasets from raw to semantic layers.
- Develop scalable data architectures including lakehouse, medallion, event-driven, and real-time processing patterns that suit diverse requirements.
- Enhance data quality, lineage tracking, observability, and platform reliability by applying strong engineering principles and leadership.
- Define and evolve data and AI platform architectures across Azure, Databricks, and other technologies, aligned with enterprise standards and strategic goals.
- Implement end-to-end MLOps and DataOps capabilities including continuous integration/delivery, testing, deployment, monitoring, orchestration, and lifecycle management.
- Standardise tooling and infrastructure automation using Git, Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, and associated platform services.
- Guarantee strong observability, validation, resilience, and operational support across data pipelines, machine learning models, and AI systems.
- Incorporate Responsible AI principles with security, privacy, and data governance throughout solution design and operations.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to enforce risk-aware engineering controls, compliance, and trustworthy platform practices.
- Evaluate emerging tech and architectures pragmatically, balancing innovation with delivery value and sustainability.
- Drive the adoption of engineering disciplines that enhance platform trust, transparency, and production readiness.
- Provide technical leadership across multi-team initiatives, influencing architecture, design, and quality standards.
- Work with AI, data, platform, product, and business teams to convert strategies into scalable technical solutions.
- Mentor engineers towards higher-quality engineering practices, reusable design patterns, and operational maturity.
- Engage actively in the company’s Data & AI community to share knowledge, set standards, and build organizational capabilities.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Over 10 years of experience in data engineering, AI/ML engineering, software development, or platform engineering with a solid record of delivering production-ready data and AI solutions in complex enterprise cloud settings.
- Proven ability to architect and fully lead secure, resilient, and high-performance data and AI platforms supporting multiple business domains.
- Expertise building and refining scalable batch and streaming data pipelines, event-driven architectures, and curated models to enable analytics, operations, and AI applications.
- Strong hands-on experience with modern data architectures such as lakehouse and medallion approaches, real-time processing, and platform-oriented engineering.
- Demonstrated success deploying AI/ML solutions including LLM apps, intelligent automation, RAG, and agentic AI systems.
- Advanced skills with Azure cloud and Databricks preferred, plus knowledge of modern data/integration tools like dbt, Kafka, Azure Event Hubs, and orchestration frameworks.
- Proficiency in Python and SQL programming, with software engineering best practices including testing, code quality, version control, and automation; familiarity with JavaScript or Shell scripting is advantageous.
- Comprehensive understanding of MLOps and DataOps workflows including CI/CD, monitoring, lifecycle management, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and infrastructure as code (Terraform).
- Experience defining technical standards, reusable patterns, and platform guardrails to improve engineering consistency and operational support.
- Thorough knowledge of data governance, privacy, security, and Responsible AI concepts, applying them to architecture and engineering processes.
- Demonstrated leadership managing complex cross-functional technical projects, influencing architecture, delivery, and quality across multiple domains.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, translating strategic objectives into effective technical solutions.
- Ability to mentor and elevate engineers, fostering a culture of excellence, pragmatism, and continuous improvement.
