Specialist, Sedimentologist

Overview

The role involves conducting and coordinating detailed sedimentological analyses to understand geology within Abu Dhabi, including core and petrographical studies, SEM imaging, and sediment classification. The specialist uses these studies to build models of paleoenvironments that aid exploration and reservoir evaluation.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out comprehensive sedimentological work such as core descriptions, thin sections analysis, and SEM photography, integrating results with data from petrophysical, geological, and engineering disciplines.
• Oversee consultants’ sedimentological studies to ensure data accuracy and report findings to relevant teams.
• Lead development and continual refinement of paleo-depositional models supporting exploration objectives.
• Evaluate previous sedimentological findings to identify knowledge gaps and recommend additional specialized studies.
• Coordinate petrographic and core analyses to update sedimentological interpretations.
• Support and review sedimentological components of stratigraphic, geophysical, and petrophysical studies undertaken internally or via third parties.
• Generate sedimentological data sets for petroleum system modeling aimed at identifying exploration potential in Abu Dhabi.
• Contribute expertise to volumetric estimation, risk evaluation, portfolio prioritization, and documentation.
• Engage with suppliers of geological software to keep abreast of technological advances relevant to sedimentology.
• Facilitate data exchanges with adjacent regional entities to enrich the corporate exploration database.
• Participate in reporting activities, including management highlights and well drilling updates.
• Recommend and justify acquisition of hardware and software tools for exploration and sedimentological work.
• Manage ad hoc requests such as academic data inquiries, training coordination, and GIS database tasks.
• Ensure quality control and updating of geological data from various internal and external sources.
• Plan and supervise sedimentology activities to achieve departmental goals, including staff training and development.
• Support budget preparation and monitor expenditures to maintain operational efficiency.
• Implement company and international standards, policies, processes, and procedures relevant to sedimentological operations.
• Drive innovation by developing tools and methods enhancing workflow quality and productivity.
• Ensure adherence to health, safety, environment, and sustainability policies aligned with ADNOC’s standards.
• Contribute data and insights for management information systems and progress reports.

Communication and Collaboration

Regular interaction with division staff is expected to coordinate project execution. Frequent communication occurs with personnel from group companies, joint ventures, and international shareholders for joint exploration initiatives.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in geology or geoscience.
• At least 10 years of professional experience in exploration geology focusing on sedimentology, including leading prospect maturation efforts.

Core Technical Skills

• Advanced expertise in hydrocarbon reservoirs and geological interpretation.
• Proficiency in sedimentary basin analysis and sedimentology techniques.
• Experience with reservoir characterization, stratigraphy, and conventional core and petrophysical analysis.
• Knowledge of geophysical modeling, data integration, and geochemical analytical methods.
• Capability in geological data analysis, sediment depositional behavior, and exploration geology analysis.
• Familiarity with artificial intelligence applications for process optimization and data interpretation.
