The district's coverage reaches from Nanoose Bay to Bowser and from Errington to Lasqueti Island, with a unique off-grid school powered by solar energy.

Job Overview

The district is seeking Spare School Meals Workers to support their school meal programs by preparing and distributing breakfasts, lunches, and snacks ensuring all students are served with equity, respect, and dignity within legal and regulatory frameworks. Spare employees receive additional pay in lieu of benefits, statutory holidays, and vacation.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in menu planning and development, considering nutritional standards and using local food sources when possible.
• Comply with BC Ministry of Education food and beverage guidelines, WorkSafe BC, safe food handling practices, and all relevant health laws.
• Track food consumption and gather student preferences.
• Prepare, categorize, and distribute lunches based on divisions promptly.
• Properly sort and store leftover food following health regulations.
• Participate in meal serving and cleanup activities.
• Supervise students, guiding helpers and runners regarding procedures.
• Photocopy and distribute monthly program newsletters to all students.
• Maintain records and participant lists for the meal program.
• Communicate effectively with students, staff, and other stakeholders.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Completion of Grade 12 education.
• Food Safe Level 1 and 2 certifications.
• At least two years of related experience within the past five years.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality concerning students and program operations.
• Capability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
• Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
• Possession of a Responsible Adult Certificate is a plus.
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
• Nutrition education or certification is advantageous.

Additional Information

Successful candidates must pass a Criminal Records Search under the Criminal Records Review Act. Applicants are required to submit three professional references with their application. For further inquiries, the Human Resources department is available to assist.

Compensation

Spare employees earn an additional 4% in lieu of benefits, 4% in lieu of statutory holidays, and 6% in lieu of vacation pay.
