Job description

About Landscape Connections Trust and the Halo Project

Landscape Connections Trust (LCT) is a charitable organisation collaborating with communities across North Ōtepoti, from Dunedin to Waikouaiti. Its mission is to promote and engage the community in enhancing, preserving, and connecting the regional landscape. Via the Halo Project, LCT implements two ambitious landscape-wide initiatives: Source to Sea, which aims at habitat restoration and community conservation, and Predator Free Dunedin, which focuses on large-scale predator control.

The Source to Sea programme adopts a "ki uta ki tai" philosophy, linking restoration activities from the mountains through rivers, wetlands, and estuaries down to the coastline. This initiative encompasses native plantings, habitat restoration, controlling invasive plant species, and maintaining restoration sites across multiple locations.

Engaging the community is vital to Source to Sea. The field team works closely with volunteers, landowners, and partner organisations on hands-on conservation projects, fostering local skills, environmental knowledge, and community bonds.

About the Role

The Source to Sea Ranger will primarily perform practical, outdoor conservation tasks, supporting the Operations Field Lead and Community Field Lead to advance ecological restoration within the Halo Project region.

Key activities include native tree planting and upkeep, managing invasive plant species, applying herbicides, nursery duties, and various conservation efforts. This role also involves collaborating with volunteers and community members during fieldwork.

The responsibilities assigned will align with the candidate’s expertise and experience. Skilled Rangers may gain opportunities to oversee field operations, whereas those newer to conservation work will receive mentorship to build their capabilities.

About You

We seek candidates who are dependable, practical, and comfortable working outdoors, ideally with experience in conservation, ecological restoration, horticulture, or land management. Teamwork and engaging positively with volunteers, mana whenua, and the broader community are essential. A strong dedication to workplace safety is required.

Experience with native planting, restoration upkeep, and controlling pest plants is advantageous. Relevant certifications such as GrowSafe, chainsaw operation, LUV, and first aid are desirable. Possession of a full New Zealand driver’s license is mandatory.
