Job description
About the Role
We have an exciting leadership opportunity to join FanDuel's Customer Product Engineering (CPE) domain as a Software Engineering Director. The teams you lead are behind critical customer experiences such as fast sign-ups, reliable deposits and withdrawals, geolocation validations, responsible gaming, and personalized promotions and messaging. The CPE domain powers the systems customers interact with first and trust most, ensuring seamless and dependable user journeys during peak sporting events.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership across multiple engineering teams, define clear technical visions, and ensure delivery aligns with customer-focused outcomes.
- Own core customer experience metrics like registration success, time to first bet, deposit and withdrawal success rates, payout speed, and geolocation accuracy, focusing on end-to-end journey availability rather than isolated services.
- Establish operational excellence standards including KPIs, monitoring, and the ability to distinguish actual system degradations from noise.
- Prepare the engineering systems for extreme event-driven loads on major sporting days, validating capacity, failover, and degradation strategies through rehearsals.
- Mitigate risk from third-party dependencies (payment providers, identity/KYC vendors, geolocation suppliers) by implementing redundancy, graceful degradation, and fallback mechanisms to prevent supplier issues from impacting customers.
- Incorporate regulatory requirements into engineering design, ensuring auditability, data boundaries, and jurisdiction-specific compliance, collaborating closely with Compliance and Legal teams to maintain speed and safety.
- Maintain high standards for responsible gaming and player integrity systems, ensuring protection features operate accurately and timely without hindering legitimate play.
- Streamline the existing technical landscape by reducing duplicated capabilities, lowering inter-team coupling, and improving the speed of changes so the domain becomes progressively easier to work with.
- Define the approach for AI usage across software lifecycles, evaluating its impact on throughput, quality, and security, while discerning meaningful benefits from superficial improvements.
- Collaborate with Product, Compliance, Risk, Finance, and Customer Operations teams early in the roadmap planning process to align priorities and accelerate delivery.
Additional Information
This role is a hands-on leadership position requiring the ability to make tough decisions, build consensus when necessary, and act decisively when needed. It involves close collaboration across engineering and non-engineering teams and requires a visible presence as a leadership role model who embraces a team-first mentality and humility.
