Software Engineer - TUFLOW

About the Role

Join BMT as a Software Engineer focused on developing and enhancing TUFLOW, our leading hydraulic modelling software used for simulating flooding, storm surge, and coastal processes across consultancies and government agencies. Our software leverages GPU computing to handle large-scale simulations efficiently, producing results in hours instead of days.

The core responsibility centers on advancing the compute engines and solvers using CUDA C/C++ along with numerical kernel optimization, embedded within a mature multilingual codebase that includes modern Fortran, CUDA C++, Python, and Rust. You will work with both existing code and new feature development with a strong emphasis on correctness, reproducibility, and high performance, ensuring TUFLOW’s scientific accuracy leads the field.

We incorporate AI-assisted development extensively; your workflow will include the use of coding assistants and autonomous tools, requiring critical evaluation and validation of AI-generated outputs. Additionally, you will explore AI applications such as machine learning and large language model (LLM) integration, contributing to surrogate model development and tooling enhancements.

This role involves collaboration within a multidisciplinary team of software and hydraulic engineers, ensuring rapid, domain-informed feedback allows for impactful technical contributions and largely independent technical decision-making. While prior experience in flood or coastal engineering is not mandatory, a curiosity to understand the physics underlying the computations is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Execute complex software development tasks independently using professional judgement and initiative.
• Manage workload effectively to meet deadlines, quality standards, and project scope.
• Develop, test, document, and maintain features in the TUFLOW Software Suite, focusing on GPU computing and AI functionalities.
• Participate in modernizing the TUFLOW codebase to enhance product maintenance, performance, and user requirements.
• Collaborate with BMT specialists and TUFLOW team members on technical, research, and development initiatives.
• Engage with end-users and stakeholders to gather requirements and support ongoing software priorities.
• Adhere to organizational quality, safety, security, and development standards.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of software development processes.
• Maintain and advance your technical skills relevant to this evolving domain.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience in software development.
• Proficiency with software development tools and methodologies including version control, code review, automated testing, and issue tracking.
• Demonstrated expertise with C/C++ and CUDA programming or other GPU computing platforms, with a preference for NVIDIA and cross-platform technologies.
• Established familiarity with AI assistance in software development, employing coding assistants and agentic tooling responsibly.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience with AI and large language model architectures such as RAG or MCP.
• Knowledge of developing or integrating machine learning surrogate models.
• Background in flood, coastal engineering, or scientific numerical modeling fields.
