About Morningstar Indexes Team
The Morningstar Indexes group specializes in equity and manager research, asset allocation, and portfolio construction, delivering cutting-edge investment solutions. Leveraging Morningstar’s intellectual property, the team crafts indexes that support investors through market monitoring, benchmarking, and asset allocation. This expanding division offers a diverse collection of global indexes covering equities, bonds, commodities, and asset allocation strategies.
Role Overview
We are seeking a proactive backend engineer skilled primarily in Python with additional Java expertise to join the Indexes Technology team. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining RESTful APIs, microservices, and data processing components that underpin Morningstar’s index and mutual fund data platforms. You will collaborate within an Agile environment alongside experienced engineers who support your continuous professional growth. The technology stack is mainly Python-oriented (FastAPI, Pandas, NumPy, pytest) complemented by Java Spring Boot services, operating on AWS infrastructure with PostgreSQL, Kafka, and Docker.
Primary Responsibilities
- Design and develop backend services and REST APIs using Python frameworks such as FastAPI or Flask.
- Contribute to enterprise-level Java Spring Boot applications.
- Implement RESTful APIs and microservices with clean, reusable, and well-tested code.
- Create unit and integration tests using pytest and JUnit; engage in thorough code reviews and Agile team activities.
- Diagnose, debug, and resolve software bugs throughout the stack.
- Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including team leads, business analysts, and QA to ensure high quality deliverables.
- Embrace modern software development tools, engineering best practices, and AI-assisted development methodologies.
Candidate Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science, IT, or a related discipline.
- 3 to 5 years of professional experience in backend development.
- Expertise in Python 3.x, with experience in FastAPI or Flask, and strong knowledge of REST API and microservice architecture.
- Proficiency in data processing with Pandas and NumPy.
- Understanding of multiprocessing or multithreading concepts.
- Experience with robust exception handling, data structures, and algorithms.
- Familiarity with unit testing frameworks such as pytest; dependency management using Poetry or uv.
- Secondary proficiency in Java 17+ (Java 21 advantageous), including Spring Boot / Spring MVC, REST APIs, build tools like Maven or Gradle, and JUnit.
- Solid grasp of object-oriented programming, fundamental design patterns, and SOLID principles.
- Experience with Git, debugging, troubleshooting, and Agile/Scrum workflows.
- Strong problem-solving aptitude, keen willingness to learn, and effective communication skills.
Beneficial Skills
- Fundamental knowledge of AWS services including S3, Lambda, ECS, and RDS.
- Experience with PostgreSQL and SQL querying.
- Familiarity with containerization technologies such as Docker and a foundational understanding of Kubernetes.
- Exposure to messaging/streaming platforms like Apache Kafka.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
- Usage of AI coding aids like GitHub Copilot and familiarity with AI or LLM-based development tools.
- Knowledge of Redis caching mechanisms.
