About Grafana Labs
Grafana Labs is the creator of the open observability cloud, emphasizing open source, open standards, and an open culture. Their Grafana Cloud platform supports over 35 million users and 7,000 customers including leading organizations like Anthropic, Bloomberg, NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Salesforce, providing tools to ensure application reliability, incident resolution, and telemetry optimization. The company operates fully remotely with over 1,600 team members worldwide.
Role Overview
The Platform Metal squad is a new team focused on provisioning and managing physical infrastructure, including storage, networking, and Kubernetes clusters outside the public cloud environment. This role involves managing the Kubernetes control plane and resources on on-premises hardware, catering to internal engineering teams' needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the entire physical 'Metal' infrastructure, from bare metal provisioning through Kubernetes cluster deployment and management.
- Oversee cluster networking components, including load balancing, NAT, DNS, Container Network Interfaces (CNIs), inter-cluster communications, routing protocols, and overall network architecture.
- Handle cluster scheduling and autoscaling capabilities.
- Maintain Crossplane compositions and Terraform modules for cloud service provider resources common to users, including versioning and compatibility management.
- Collaborate closely with Grafana Cloud application teams to understand requirements and ensure investment in necessary platform features.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate is collaborative, comfortable operating within a remote-first, consensus-driven company culture valuing transparency, autonomy, and mutual respect. They embrace working with distributed systems and have a holistic development approach, taking ownership through design, coding, integration testing, and deployment phases. Experience operating software with users in mind is essential, alongside datacenter familiarity and participation in on-call rotations. Proficiency primarily with Go, Python, and Shell is expected.
Preferred Skills and Additional Qualifications
- Experience with technologies such as Cluster-API, Tinkerbell, Talos, and/or Ceph.
- Background in open-source or community-based software projects.
- Familiarity with cloud providers AWS, GCP, or Azure and their managed Kubernetes services (EKS, GKE, AKS).
- Hands-on management of Kubernetes workloads, including configuration with tools like Tanka and Jsonnet.
- Knowledge of Kubernetes scheduling projects such as Karpenter.
- Experience with Terraform and/or Crossplane infrastructure-as-code tools.
- Passion for programming in Go, especially building custom tools, utilities, or exporters.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for candidates based in the UK is between £72,177 and £86,612 annually, depending on experience and skill level. Compensation includes Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) to align team members with company success. Compensation varies based on geographic location and will be discussed individually if applying from outside the UK, Spain, or Ireland.
