Software Engineer - Engineering Enablement with SRE Expertise

Overview

We are searching for a Software Engineer specializing in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) to join our Engineering Enablement team, tasked with boosting developer productivity across the organization. This role involves creating and enhancing internal platforms, service architectures, and toolchains that facilitate engineering workflows at Motional.

The successful candidate will collaborate extensively with various teams to improve the reliability, scalability, and performance of infrastructure platforms, overseeing complex, mission-critical systems, and delivering top-tier service to internal customers. You'll be part of a skilled team focused on enabling rapid and dependable deployment from development to production.

The core emphasis will be on advancing our internal developer platform and productivity tools, empowering engineers to deliver robust, quality code more swiftly and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and execute strategies that bolster system reliability, scalability, and performance while continuously monitoring system health to proactively address potential disruptions.
• Develop robust backend services, continuous integration and delivery pipelines, build systems, toolchains, and platforms to support developer workflows.
• Enhance distributed systems with improvements in reliability, efficiency, and observability by integrating new tools and building features.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to analyze and optimize cloud expenses on AWS by deploying cost-efficient solutions and identifying opportunities for financial savings and infrastructural improvements.
• Actively monitor system operations to identify and mitigate risks before they affect end users.
• Contribute to critical decisions regarding system architecture and shape the technical roadmap.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• Minimum of three years’ experience in Site Reliability Engineering or DevOps positions.
• Proficiency with cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP, infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation, CI/CD systems including GitLab CI or Jenkins, and containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.
• Strong command of modern programming languages, especially Python, Go, and C++.
• Comprehensive understanding of the software development lifecycle with the ability to translate vague objectives into concrete software requirements.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills suited for a fast-paced, dynamic workplace.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in autonomous vehicle technology or robotics sectors.
• In-depth knowledge of mono-repo toolchains and services such as Bazel.
• Prior involvement in on-call rotations supporting high-severity incidents (P1 & P0 systems).
• Experience integrating AI or large language models, particularly in developing or extending Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers aimed at enhancing developer efficiency and automation.
