Position Overview

This role is offered by a partner company seeking a Software Engineer specialized in Developer Tools to work remotely in Canada. The engineer will focus on designing and building tools that simplify software integration, enhancing reliability and intuitiveness for developers. Work areas include SDKs, command-line interfaces, React Email, MCP, integrations, and the supporting backend systems.

The role requires strong backend development skills paired with a commitment to developer-friendly APIs, reliable services, and well-designed interfaces. Collaborations occur closely across product and engineering teams with frequent direct interactions with developers via support channels, GitHub, and pull requests.

Core Responsibilities

• Develop and operate developer tools that streamline integration across various programming languages, frameworks, and environments.
• Create and maintain backend services that support these developer tools, integrations, and associated workflows.
• Work with product and engineering groups to define clear API contracts ensuring uniformity across SDKs, CLI tools, MCP, and accompanying documentation.
• Design interfaces that serve both developers and AI agents for platform interaction, including command-line tooling, MCP, and skills interfaces.
• Manage compatibility, testing protocols, software releases, upgrades, and maintain backward compatibility to guarantee dependable developer experiences.
• Build shared tools to empower other engineering teams to confidently deploy updates in the developer tools ecosystem.
• Engage directly with developers through support, GitHub issues, pull requests, and other feedback mechanisms.
• Own projects comprehensively from concept and design through implementation, launch, and continuous improvement.
• Enhance product reliability by implementing proper mechanisms for authentication, authorization, retry logic, idempotency, rate limiting, monitoring, and handling partial failures.

Candidate Requirements

• Proven experience in backend software engineering, particularly with production APIs or service development and maintenance.
• Professional expertise in TypeScript and Node.js development.
• Deep knowledge of authentication, authorization, retry strategies, idempotency, rate limiting, and robust failure recovery methods.
• Experience designing software, libraries, APIs, or tools heavily relied upon by other developers in production environments.
• Keen sensitivity to developer experience with emphasis on intuitive interfaces, explicit error reporting, comprehensive documentation, and support for backwards compatibility.
• Capability to consider AI agents as end users, particularly their needs in discovery, usability, and security contexts.
• Excellent analytical skills with a talent for simplifying ambiguous challenges into actionable solutions.
• Strong communication abilities, receptiveness to feedback, and a strong ownership mindset.
• Exposure to open-source projects or participation in external developer communities is advantageous.
• Experience in building SDKs, CLI tools, MCP servers, or integrations between platforms is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of React or frontend build systems is a plus.
• Background with operational systems involving queuing, monitoring, and error handling is beneficial.
• Familiarity with multiple programming languages and insights into language-specific library design is helpful.
• Interest or experience in email technology systems is considered an asset.
