Job description
Company Overview
UpGuard is revolutionizing cyber risk management by replacing manual security hurdles with AI-powered precision. Following a successful US$75 million Series C funding, the company is rapidly scaling its infrastructure to analyze 100 billion risk signals daily. UpGuard develops a Cyber Risk Posture Management platform that integrates security ratings, threat intelligence, and advanced AI to help organizations proactively manage evolving cyber risks.
Role Overview
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will shape the technical vision for Product Engineering across our organization. Your responsibilities will span architecture, data, and scaling challenges that cross multiple teams. You will remain engaged in coding while collaborating with engineering leadership to guide platform evolution and elevate engineering standards company-wide.
Technical Environment
Our technology stack includes React and TypeScript on the front end, backend services developed in Go with PostgreSQL as our main database, all deployed on Kubernetes via Google Cloud Platform. Engineers utilize agentic coding tools like Claude Code and Cursor, with a growing portion of the product utilizing large language models (LLMs). We encourage innovative ideas to improve automation in coding, testing, review, deployment, and operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute code directly by shipping features within a product squad to ensure technical decisions are grounded in practical implementation and customer needs.
- Define and own technical strategy that spans multiple teams, driving architecture decisions and standards.
- Tackle complex scaling and data challenges associated with processing up to 100 billion risk signals daily.
- Raise engineering quality organization-wide through code reviews, mentorship, and establishing best practices.
- Collaborate with engineering and product leadership to shape both the technical roadmap and product priorities.
Desired Qualifications
- A minimum of eight years’ experience in software engineering within product-focused technology companies.
- Proficiency in TypeScript and React for frontend development.
- Strong backend programming skills in at least one language, preferably Go.
- Experience working with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL.
- Comfortable leveraging AI-assisted coding tools as a core part of the development workflow while exercising sound judgment over their output.
- Ability to balance technical quality with pragmatic business needs effectively.
- Collaborative mindset, focused on product and customer impact rather than individual code ownership.
- Proven experience setting and driving technical direction across multiple engineering teams and securing buy-in through influence rather than authority.
- A track record of owning complex scaling and architectural challenges end-to-end with meaningful business outcomes.
- Skilled at partnering with product management and leadership to align on what to build, not just how to build it.
Additional Advantages
- Background in cybersecurity domains.
- Experience deploying and managing services on Kubernetes, especially using Google Cloud Platform.
- Expertise in data engineering, large-scale scanning/crawling, or other high-throughput systems.
- Experience evolving system architecture and team culture during company growth from monolithic to service-oriented models.
- History of building sophisticated applications or systems in close collaboration with cross-functional teams.
Benefits & Perks
- Monthly lifestyle allowance to support financial, physical, and mental wellbeing.
- Work-from-home setup allowance provided during your first three months.
- Annual US$1500 learning and development budget for professional growth activities.
- Paid time off including regular PTO plus extra company-designated leave days.
- 18 weeks of paid parental leave regardless of parenting role.
- Personal leave covering sick and carer’s days.
- Flexible fully remote work environment without mandatory office attendance.
- Provision of high-end hardware suitable for your role.
- Subsidized access to generative AI tools to enhance productivity.
- Stock options allowing participation in company growth and success.
