Role Summary
As an Applied AI Engineer at AKASA, you will develop AI-driven solutions for the Clinical Documentation and Medical Coding product suite. Collaborating tightly with product, design, and machine learning teams, you will architect and build scalable services, APIs, and tools for SaaS products that significantly improve clinical and financial workflows.
Your work will directly support products that rectify clinical documentation errors affecting hundreds of thousands of patients and generate hundreds of millions of dollars in measurable value for customers. The solutions you build enhance physician documentation quality, assist clinicians in identifying unrecorded diagnoses, convert clinical notes into medical codes, and safeguard the financial integrity of health systems. The user interfaces will empower thousands of healthcare providers and staff to address complex patient cases within the U.S. healthcare system.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and develop full-stack features and products leveraging large language models (LLMs), including designing autonomous systems for revenue cycle workflows and supporting infrastructure deployed across hundreds of hospitals.
- Collaborate with domain experts to solve challenging problems spanning high-stakes clinical diagnosis and tightly regulated medical billing without straightforward solutions.
- Implement evaluation frameworks and experimentation processes to ensure robust, production-quality systems driven by data and statistical analysis, balancing medical coding policies, user inputs, and audit needs.
- Partner with product managers, clinicians, and revenue cycle specialists to expand the capabilities of AI within the healthcare revenue cycle ecosystem.
Candidate Profile and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- Minimum 3 years of professional experience in technical roles emphasizing AI, data analytics, or backend system development.
- At least 1 year of experience deploying production AI solutions accessible to end-users.
- Proven expertise in designing both offline and online evaluation systems and implementing autonomous agent-based solutions.
- Strong proficiency in Python programming language.
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced startup environment tackling complex problems.
- Healthcare technology background involving standards such as EDI, HL7, or FHIR is a beneficial plus.
Compensation and Benefits
- Competitive salary ranging from $180,000 to $250,000 annually, plus equity incentives. Candidate-specific salary adjustments may occur based on qualifications.
- Flexible paid time off policy.
- Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance coverage.
- Employer contributions toward Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
- Generous parental leave.
- Full employer-paid life insurance.
- Home office expense stipend.
- Reimbursement for cell phone and internet expenses.
- Company-observed holidays.
- 401(k) retirement savings plan.
