Workday is a Fortune 500 leader and a pioneering AI platform dedicated to enhancing the management of people, finances, and agents. Committed to shaping the future of work, we empower teams to focus on what truly matters, supported by a culture built on integrity, empathy, and shared enthusiasm. We foster an environment of collaboration, bold innovation, and personal growth while providing the tools and trust needed to succeed.
Team Overview
Join the Product Engineering team dedicated to developing agent-ready APIs that underpin Workday's next generation of intelligent services. Our team works closely with internal groups to design secure, observable, and user-friendly APIs, valuing innovation, ownership, teamwork, and continual learning from past experiences.
Role Summary
As a Software Development Engineer within Product Engineering, you will be instrumental in designing, building, and maintaining APIs and backend services critical to Workday products and agentic experiences. You will employ technologies such as TypeScript, Python, and Workday's proprietary frameworks to construct scalable and resilient distributed systems that deliver exceptional developer experiences internally.
Key Responsibilities
- Create, develop, and sustain product APIs and backend services.
- Implement robust API features covering routing, validation, authentication and authorization, data transformation, and error management.
- Focus on high-throughput, low-latency components emphasizing scalability, fault tolerance, and resilience.
- Utilize API contract and governance standards including OpenAPI/Swagger and internal policies.
- Enhance frameworks and tooling for defining, publishing, and maintaining various API types such as REST, SOAP, and GraphQL.
- Leverage observability tools like metrics, tracing, and logging to monitor production behavior and optimize performance and reliability.
- Write clean, well-tested, and documented code including unit, integration, and contract tests.
- Engage in design and code reviews; disseminate knowledge through documentation, presentations, and mentoring.
- Manage ownership of small to medium services or API segments end-to-end, covering everything from design through deployment, monitoring, and support.
- Collaborate across Workday’s code service and agent development teams globally.
Candidate Profile and Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in software engineering focused on scalable backend services or platform development.
- At least 3 years’ experience programming in TypeScript, Python, or similar languages.
- Over 2 years working with web service and API technologies such as REST, SOAP, JSON, XML Schema, WSDL, or GraphQL.
Additional Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Proficiency in modern AI-enhanced development tools like Cursor, Claude Code, or GitHub Copilot to accelerate high-quality software delivery.
- Strong algorithmic and data structure skills applied to routing, query planning, or data transformation scenarios.
- Understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including concurrency, horizontal scaling, high availability, and fault tolerance.
- Solid knowledge of API gateway responsibilities: routing, validation, authentication, throttling, transformation, and security policy enforcement.
- Experience with API lifecycle management including OpenAPI/Swagger, versioning, and documentation.
- Familiarity with testing frameworks and methodologies such as unit, integration, contract, and performance testing using tools like JUnit, ScalaTest, Postman, Mockito, and coverage analysis.
- Usage of source control and development tools including Git/GitHub, Gradle, continuous integration, debugging, and profiling techniques.
- Exposure to cloud development environments such as AWS and Kubernetes is advantageous.
- Knowledge of MCP or similar integration models is a plus.
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills, comfortable partnering with remote teams across different time zones.
- Curiosity about agentic AI and enthusiasm for creating APIs that enable AI-driven workflows.
