Job description
About the Role
Join AWS Database Migration Service (DMS) as a Software Development Manager leading a team to build the next-generation, fully managed database migration engine. AWS DMS has already migrated over 1.8 million database workloads, yet with many enterprise databases still on-premises, the need to innovate continues. This role drives the delivery of a distributed migration platform to simplify and accelerate large-scale migrations from commercial databases like SQL Server and Oracle to Amazon Aurora and RDS PostgreSQL.
Responsibilities
- Lead a team of 6 to 10 software engineers through the entire development lifecycle of a distributed migration engine, including architecture, design, production delivery, and operational excellence.
- Own end-to-end feature development such as change data capture, replication, validation, automated cutover orchestration, and assessments to minimize manual configuration for customers.
- Make architectural decisions on distributed systems challenges including scaling, fault tolerance, consistency guarantees, and modular engine components supporting new source-target databases.
- Collaborate with Principal Engineers and leadership on platform evolution, compute infrastructure, cross-product integrations, and long-term migration strategy.
- Balance feature delivery velocity with reliability and operational health across a service handling hundreds of thousands of migrations worldwide.
- Manage customer escalations for enterprise migrations, translating pain points into systemic engineering improvements rather than temporary patches.
- Prioritize competing needs across security compliance, product roadmap, and customer delivery while communicating trade-offs to senior leadership.
- Cultivate a high-performing team through onboarding, mentorship, career development, and fostering a culture of ownership and operational excellence.
- Drive AI-powered engineering practices such as autonomous issue detection, AI-assisted operations, and automated test generation to boost team productivity.
- Maintain metrics for deployment success, escalations, and customer satisfaction to proactively design reliability into the platform architecture.
A Typical Day
Your day might include reviewing design trade-offs for new distributed components, participating in customer deep dives to gather requirements, balancing delivery priorities, reviewing architectural proposals for pluggable connectors, mentoring engineers through complex issues, and planning upcoming releases with a focus on both innovation and stability.
