Job Description
This role provides operational support to the Store Manager, handling daily tasks to ensure seamless operations within the Thrift Store. In addition to supervisory duties, this position also functions as a Sales Associate.
Accountabilities
- Engage with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
- Maintain the integrity and proper handling of all donated items.
- Accurately process all customer transactions, including cash and debit sales.
- Contribute to achieving store sales targets by upholding high customer service standards.
- Perform opening and closing procedures for the store as required.
- Process incoming donations, including loading/unloading, sorting, pricing, and storing.
- Develop product knowledge to effectively answer customer inquiries via phone and in person.
- Ensure store security by actively monitoring activities within the premises.
- Handle merchandise safely and maintain an organized stockroom, assisting with stock rotation.
- Support inventory control through proper receiving, sorting, and pricing of donations according to guidelines.
- Assist in developing store layout plans and visual merchandising, including window and product displays, to enhance customer appeal and maintain store tidiness.
- Restock inventory on the sales floor as directed by supervisors.
- Remove inventory from the sales floor when instructed.
- Ensure all donated goods are sorted and processed according to quality standards.
- Maintain an attractive and organized store appearance, including restocking shelves, cleaning, sweeping, dusting, and mopping.
- Adhere strictly to all store policies and procedures.
- Participate in inventory reconciliation processes, such as cycle counting.
- Deliver exceptional service to all guests and donors.
- Act as a Team Lead or Working Supervisor for Store Associates in the absence of the Store Manager.
- Provide operational guidance and on-the-job training to staff as needed.
- Ensure a safe and healthy work environment by complying with all Health & Safety regulations.
- Undertake other work-related duties as assigned.
Critical Relationships
- Internal: National Recycling Operations (NRO) Administration, Thrift Store management, and staff.
- External: Donors, clients, and contractors.
Managerial and Technical Responsibilities
- Reports directly to the Store Manager.
- No direct reports.
Financial and Material Management
- May provide guidance on specific procedures to others.
- Moderate responsibility for materials.
- May handle petty cash on occasion.
Working Conditions
- This is a permanent, full-time position.
- Work is performed in a standard retail store environment.
- Requires continuous physical exertion, including stretching, lifting up to 30 pounds without assistance, bending, twisting, pushing, standing, and walking.
- May involve exposure to fumes, dust, and fluctuating temperatures.
- Must meet established deadlines.
- Involves frequent interpersonal interactions, potentially including conflict resolution with guests, donors, vendors, and employees.
- Work tasks are varied, with some periods of repetitive duties.
Education, Experience, and Qualifications
- Demonstrated willingness to understand and support The Salvation Army's mission and purpose in Canada and its implications for job responsibilities.
- Must work in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) Act and Regulations, and adhere to The Salvation Army's health and safety policies and procedures.
- An alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Education, Qualifications, and Certifications
- Some high school completion required.
Experience and Knowledge
- Minimum of two years of experience in a retail or warehouse setting.
Skills and Capabilities
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Physical ability to frequently lift and carry up to 30 lbs without assistance, including bending, twisting, pulling, and pushing products.
- Keen attention to detail.
- Must successfully pass applicable screening and background checks as determined by The Salvation Army.
Compensation
The anticipated salary range for this role is $16.50 to $19.89 per hour, with a potential maximum of $23.86 per hour. Salary placement within this range will be determined by factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and the candidate's relevant experience, skills, and qualifications.
