Job Opportunity
We invite passionate and driven individuals to join Cheltenham Downs Farm as a Shepherd General. This role offers a fantastic opportunity to work on a diverse livestock farm, either as a career starter or for those with prior farming experience. The position supports skill development and exposure to a wide range of farming operations within a supportive team environment.
About the Role
As a member of a tightly-knit team of five, you'll work closely with an experienced Farm Manager who will guide your growth and help you achieve your career objectives. This position involves various day-to-day responsibilities across the farm, allowing you to learn and build confidence while contributing to farm success. Note that this is a drive in–drive out role.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and care for livestock through routine stock work
- Assist in ensuring animal health and welfare standards
- Conduct general maintenance on the farm
- Perform fencing tasks and contribute to farm development projects
- Collaborate with the larger farm team to accomplish tasks safely and effectively
Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates are enthusiastic about farming and working with livestock, committed to delivering results within a team setting, and are solution-oriented. You should be practical and eager to improve how tasks are performed.
- Show genuine care for animal wellbeing
- Possess or have access to capable working dogs if possible
- Be organized, dependable, and self-driven in daily activities
- Communicate effectively and work collaboratively
- Comfortable with record-keeping and using agricultural technology, or willing to learn
- Take initiative regarding health, safety, and the maintenance of farm assets
- Hold a valid restricted or full driver's license
About Cheltenham Downs and Pāmu
Cheltenham Downs is a 1050 effective hectare Sheep and Beef farm located 25 minutes from Palmerston North. It functions as an important finishing operation with around 25,000 lambs finished year-round and additional grazing of ewe hoggets and dairy heifer replacements from other Pāmu farms within the North Island.
