About DuckDuckGo

Founded in 2008, DuckDuckGo is a leading online protection company with a remote-first team of over 300 members. The company boasts profitability since 2014 and generates over $100 million USD in annual revenue. Millions rely on its privacy-focused browser across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, its search engine, and the Privacy Pro product. The company culture fosters trust, inclusivity, and empowers individuals to own their projects end-to-end, from planning through execution and postmortem review.

Role Overview

As a Senior Web Compatibility Engineer in the Web Dependability Engineering Team, you will ensure smooth website functionality on DuckDuckGo’s browsers across multiple platforms including Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android. Your responsibilities include reverse-engineering site detection of privacy features, creating compatibility layers for browser APIs, and developing automation pipelines for triaging site issues. You will lead debugging efforts to differentiate issues caused by sites, browsers, or privacy protections, respond to critical incidents involving major sites, and create fixes that improve user retention across all platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Reverse-engineer how sites detect DuckDuckGo's privacy protections and develop effective countermeasures.
  • Create browser API shims to ensure consistent operation across various browser engines and system webviews.
  • Design and implement large language model agents to automate reproduction and triage of reported site breakages.
  • Manage web compatibility issues, lead triage and incident response efforts for site breakages affecting user experience.
  • Develop and deploy robust fixes across all supported platforms, enhancing overall browsing reliability.

Candidate Profile

  • At least 7 years of experience developing and debugging sophisticated web applications utilizing vanilla JavaScript.
  • In-depth understanding of web standards, web components, and browser APIs; familiarity with Swift, Kotlin, C#, C++, or Python is advantageous.
  • Expertise in reverse-engineering obfuscated third-party scripts and isolating bugs via minimal test cases.
  • A strong drive to uncover difficult bugs and methodically trace them to their origins.
  • Interest and experience in automating monotonous tasks through development of intelligent tools to amplify team productivity.
  • Proven ability to triage issues, lead incident responses, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Experience shipping software beyond web browsers, including native or desktop clients.
  • Capability to independently lead complex, ambiguous projects with minimal oversight.

Compensation & Benefits

The role offers an annual salary of $178,500 USD, along with stock options. Compensation is standardized across all professional levels regardless of geographic location or team. Company-sponsored health benefits apply only to team members residing in the United States. Additional support programs include paid parental leave, office setup, and co-working allowances to prioritize employee well-being.

Additional Information & Terms

  • Meetings require active video participation.
  • Biannual travel is expected: once for an all-hands meeting and once for a team retreat, each lasting about 4-5 days.
  • Flexible work schedule with approximately 40 hours per week commitment, without fixed core hours.
  • Appointment requires successful completion of a background check.
  • Applicants must provide accurate and complete information; falsification can result in offer denial or termination after onboarding.
