Job description
About DuckDuckGo
DuckDuckGo is a privacy-first online protection company with a remote-first culture, focused on raising trust standards online. Established in 2008, the company is profitable since 2014 with annual revenue exceeding $100 million. Millions use its privacy-centric browser across Mac, Windows, iOS, and Android, alongside its search engine and Privacy Pro product. The company fosters an inclusive environment where team members have full ownership of their projects, from inception through execution to retrospectives.
Role Overview
As a Senior Web Compatibility Engineer in the Web Dependability Engineering Team, you will ensure websites function reliably within DuckDuckGo’s browsers across all supported platforms. Your tasks include:
- Analyzing how websites detect privacy protections and creating strategies to counteract issues that affect site functionality
- Implementing browser API shims to harmonize user experience across different engines and system webviews
- Developing large language model-driven automation pipelines for reproducing and triaging reported site malfunctions
You will lead the diagnosis and resolution of complex web compatibility challenges, differentiating between website, browser, and privacy-related faults. Managing incident responses for major site breakages and delivering robust, cross-platform fixes will be central to your responsibilities, alongside projects aimed at boosting user retention through a seamless browsing experience.
Candidate Profile
- Over 7 years’ experience crafting and troubleshooting sophisticated web applications using native JavaScript
- Strong expertise with web standards, web components, and browser API design; familiarity with Swift, Kotlin, C#, C++, or Python is a plus
- Proficient in reverse engineering obfuscated third-party scripts and condensing problems into minimal reproducible test cases
- Driven by the challenge of tracking down complex bugs to their origins
- Interest in automating routine workflows and building intelligent tools to amplify team productivity
- Skilled in issue triage, leading incident management, and effectively communicating with both technical and non-technical audiences
- Experience extending product development beyond web environments, including native desktop or mobile clients
- Capability to independently guide multifaceted and unclear projects toward successful outcomes
Compensation and Benefits
The position offers an annual salary of $178,500 USD plus stock options. Salary is consistent across geographies and levels. Company-sponsored health benefits are provided for US-based employees only. Additional support includes paid parental leave, office setup funding, and coworking stipends to foster wellbeing.
Work Environment and Expectations
- Mandatory video participation in meetings
- Biannual travel is expected: once for an all-hands meeting and once for a team retreat (each typically lasting 4-5 days); exceptions may be accommodated
- Flexible working hours but generally a full-time, 40-hour week commitment
- Employment contingent on successful background screening
- Applicants must provide truthful and complete information; falsifications may result in offer denial or later termination
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
DuckDuckGo is committed to providing equal employment opportunities and prohibit discrimination or harassment on any protected basis, ensuring accessibility throughout the hiring process and offering accommodations as needed.
