Job description

About Geosyntec Mining

Geosyntec Mining, formerly known as Red Earth Engineering, is a specialized engineering consultancy acclaimed for its expertise in mine waste management, tailings, geotechnical engineering, and geosynthetic containment. Our mission is to empower clients to achieve success by providing outstanding service and innovative, cost-effective solutions addressing challenges in energy, environment, natural resources, and civil infrastructure sectors.

We serve as a preferred consulting partner for numerous leading mining, resource, and land development companies in Australia. Leveraging Geosyntec's global reputation in hydrogeology, geochemistry, geotechnical engineering, seismicity, and risk management, we assist clients in overcoming complex engineering challenges and enhancing risk comprehension.

Demonstrating our leadership in innovation and technical excellence, we have recently established an advanced testing facility under the guidance of Dr. David Reid.

Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Tailings / Geotechnical Engineer to join our office in Perth (also options in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Gold Coast, or Hobart). This role suits a skilled and experienced professional eager to contribute to and lead innovative, challenging projects, including several for which we serve as the appointed Engineer of Record.

The position involves supporting clients' tailings and mine waste management and operational teams, ensuring safety and compliance with evolving standards, which are crucial for demonstrating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) commitments and maintaining a Social License to Operate. The role contributes technical and operational expertise for Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) and Water Storage Facilities (WSF).

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct geotechnical and environmental site characterization studies.
  • Develop and manage instrumentation and monitoring systems for projects.
  • Support project and task management activities along with proposal preparation.
  • Prepare detailed engineering documentation such as reports, design calculations, drawings, and technical specifications.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a related discipline is required.
  • Advanced degrees in relevant fields are preferred.
  • Professional engineering registration is preferred but not mandatory.
  • Minimum 5 to over 10 years consulting experience within a geotechnical practice.
  • Expertise with geotechnical engineering software; knowledge of numerical modelling tools is advantageous.
  • Experience with GIS, CAD, and tailings modelling software such as QGIS, 12d, AutoCAD, Civil3D, or Muk3D.
  • Familiarity with dam safety standards and guidelines including ANCOLD, GISTM, CDA, and WA-DMR.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently in a fast-paced consultancy environment while meeting deadlines.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness and ability to conduct fieldwork and overnight travel as required.
  • Valid Australian driver's license and clean driving record suitable for business travel.
