Senior Systems Engineer – Server Provisioning & Deployment

About the Role

The Data Center Service team at ByteDance drives the expansion and maintenance of large-scale hyperscale data centers. This team oversees the full lifecycle of server fleets, delivering scalable and dependable cloud solutions alongside essential infrastructure services.

Key Responsibilities

• Manage operating system deployment and delivery across expansive data center environments, including OS image installation, system initialization, and tailored OS provisioning.
• Design and enhance the core architecture of hyperscale automated server provisioning platforms aimed at improved scalability, reliability, and operational efficiency.
• Develop and support backend components such as PXE services and OS image management while enabling hardware compatibility for new server platforms.
• Investigate and troubleshoot complex issues during server delivery, and innovate by integrating AI-driven technologies including Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI Agents for intelligent log analytics, root cause analysis, automated remediation, and self-healing.
• Build and refine CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure updates, ensuring lifecycle security compliance, risk reduction, and disaster recovery readiness.
• Coordinate comprehensive hardware validation activities to guarantee server delivery quality and compliance standards.
• Lead performance testing and optimization of critical server components like CPUs, memory, storage devices, and GPUs, including benchmarking and stress tests at both node and cluster scales.
• Create automated benchmarking and stress-testing frameworks with scripting languages to enhance testing efficiency and coverage.
• Conduct quality analytics on large server shipments and spearhead quality control initiatives addressing hardware and delivery issues through closed-loop resolutions.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related fields with at least 3 years of experience in IT infrastructure, server operations, system engineering, or hardware validation.
• In-depth knowledge of data center infrastructure and operating models.
• Expertise in Linux operating systems and server hardware architectures including CPU, memory, storage, RAID, and network interfaces.
• Familiarity with PXE-based automated provisioning workflows and network protocols like DHCP, TFTP, and HTTP.
• Experience with out-of-band management technologies such as IPMI, Redfish and boot architectures including BIOS and UEFI.
• Proficiency in automation and programming using Golang, Python, or Shell scripting.
• Competence with Git workflows, Linux system administration, and operational troubleshooting.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in server hardware validation, benchmarking, and quality assurance processes.
• Strong understanding of performance measurement for CPUs, memory, storage, and GPUs.
• Skilled in designing and implementing automated performance and stress-testing frameworks.
• Proven track record in conducting large-scale quality analytics and driving operational excellence.
• Strong technical documentation abilities covering specifications, tests, project reports, and runbooks.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving capabilities to independently manage complex technical challenges.
• Experience using AI-assisted tools for enhancing development productivity and troubleshooting.
