Senior Software Engineer, Server Networking Security (Rust)

About the Role

Join the Server Ingress Security team at MongoDB, where we are rebuilding the server's networking ingress to strengthen security across MongoDB clusters. This team spearheads the creation of the Atlas Network Protection layer—high-performance, security-centric services that protect the database's pre-authentication vulnerabilities and enable swift responses to emerging threats. As a Senior Engineer and founding team member, you'll contribute to a multi-year strategic roadmap.

Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, and maintain production-quality security services in Rust prioritizing safety, accuracy, and high performance.
• Build ingress networking and security solutions to secure the availability and efficiency of the database service.
• Analyze test failures and performance issues to implement effective solutions.
• Lead feature development and project management within the Ingress Security domain.
• Collaborate cross-functionally with Server, Atlas, Drivers, SRE, and Product Security teams to ensure seamless Atlas Network Protection integration.
• Partner with Product Management and Engineering leadership to curate and execute the team's roadmap.

Candidate Profile and Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years experience developing production-grade systems software.
• Proficiency with large backend codebases and performance-focused software, particularly using Rust.
• Preferably hands-on experience in security-sensitive or networking-related fields.
• Strong systems programming foundation, including multithreading and performance profiling.
• Bonus: Knowledge of network protocols, TLS, connection lifecycle, attack surface mitigation, input validation, memory safety, and defense-in-depth security models.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills with eagerness for teamwork.
• Strong time management with the ability to realistically evaluate project scope and complexity.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related discipline, or equivalent practical experience; solid grasp of data structures, algorithms, software design, and architecture; interest in high-availability and security-critical system theory and practice.

Success Milestones

• Within one month: Gain understanding of Atlas Network Protection layer architecture, set up development tools, and resolve initial bugs.
• Within three months: Make significant contributions to Rust codebase, assume code review duties, and engage in design reviews.
• Within six months: Independently lead new feature development and mentor junior engineers.
• Within twelve months: Spearhead improvements in security, performance, and operations of the Ingress Security stack and shape the long-term technical strategy.
