Job description

Overview

Based in Dublin, this pivotal role involves driving the development of a modern infrastructure platform that transforms the deployment, configuration, validation, monitoring, and operation of Bloomberg's critical production services. By leading efforts to automate and scale current manual processes, the team aims to establish declarative configuration, efficient deployment workflows, robust validation systems, comprehensive telemetry, and operational tooling that enhance service reliability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Architecting and developing reliable software systems that manage production services safely at scale.
  • Creating deployment, configuration, validation, and observability workflows tailored for production infrastructure.
  • Designing systems to facilitate easier change management including review, validation, auditing, and rollback, minimizing manual intervention.
  • Enhancing telemetry data, alerting mechanisms, and health checks to expedite detection and diagnosis of issues.
  • Owning and operating the platform-managed production services, including participation in on-call rotations.
  • Collaborating with internal users and partner teams to gather requirements, clarify constraints, and deliver practical platform solutions.
  • Conducting meticulous code reviews ensuring correctness, design quality, test coverage, maintainability, and operational safety.
  • Questioning existing assumptions and contributing to evolving platform architecture and operational practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Extensive software engineering experience in functional or object-oriented languages; Python and Go experience are advantageous but strong engineering judgment is paramount.
  • Proven expertise in building, testing, debugging, and operating production-grade software or infrastructure platforms.
  • Capability to analyze ambiguous technical challenges, weigh trade-offs, and make sound architectural decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills encompassing written, verbal, and diagrammatic formats.
  • Commitment to high standards in code ownership, including thorough self and peer code review for quality and maintainability.
  • Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience with deployment platforms, orchestration, infrastructure-as-code workflows, or internal tooling for developers/operators.
  • Knowledge of safe rollout strategies, validation processes, rollback mechanisms, or automated remediation systems.
  • Familiarity with observability tools like Splunk, Grafana, Humio, or Prometheus.
  • Experience in supporting varied internal user needs while maintaining clear platform governance.
  • Understanding of Linux infrastructure, virtualization technologies, and managing large-scale production environments.
  • Interest in mentoring peers and elevating team engineering standards.

Technological Environment

  • Use of Bloomberg's internal engineering tools and production infrastructure.
  • Primary languages: Python and Go.
  • Operating on KVM virtualization atop Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
  • Observability via platforms such as Humio, Splunk, and Grafana.

Additional Information

This position is an end-to-end ownership role within a newly forming Dublin team entrusted with shaping the platform’s future standards, architecture, and operational model. The role includes participation in on-call support rotations, reflecting the critical nature of the production services involved. Candidates are encouraged to apply based on demonstrated skills, regardless of years of experience. This opportunity offers involvement in a growing engineering presence within Bloomberg’s Dublin office, contributing significantly to client-facing services in dynamic markets.
