Job description
About Ecommerce Equation
Ecommerce Equation powers data-driven decisions for online brands in Australia and the US. Founded by Jay Wright, the company combines high-level strategy with practical implementation, focusing on delivering precise, actionable insights for growth. The team values accuracy above all, often prioritizing data integrity over new features to ensure customers trust their metrics.
Role Overview
As Senior Software Engineer reporting to the Head of Engineering, you will collaborate with the Sydney-based product and engineering team to enhance and scale the platform. Your primary responsibilities include ownership of the PostgreSQL data architecture, event-based data synchronization from platforms like Shopify, Google, and Meta, and the complex calculations transforming that data into trusted customer metrics.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure flawless ingestion and accuracy of customer data through data modeling, integration, and calculations, maintaining alignment with source platforms and alerting on variances.
- Maintain platform reliability and performance at scale, overseeing AWS infrastructure, infrastructure as code (IaC), observability, load testing (targeting up to 3x current volume), and ensuring calculations run within tight performance windows (under 2 seconds).
- Manage event-driven jobs and integrations with robust fault tolerance — implementing idempotent processing, dead-letter queues, replay capabilities, alerts for redundancies or missed runs, and timely upgrades of third-party APIs.
- Elevate engineering standards by promoting architectural decision records (ADRs), thorough code reviews supported by AI tools, comprehensive testing, and blameless incident retrospectives.
Work Methodology
- Leverage AI-assisted development to design, implement, and review code via specification-driven workflows with predefined acceptance criteria.
- Ensure all changes undergo peer-reviewed pull requests complemented by AI support.
- Deploy database schema updates with zero downtime using expand/contract migration strategies.
- Release software on a weekly basis, progressing towards daily deployments, supported fully by infrastructure defined in IaC to prevent configuration drift.
- Maintain thorough documentation of architectural decisions and conduct blameless reviews following any incidents.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Extensive hands-on expertise with PostgreSQL or similar relational databases, including schema design suited for scaling workloads, query optimization, index tuning, and lock contention analysis.
- Proven ability to execute large-scale database migrations safely in production environments, emphasizing cautious, incremental updates.
- Strong background in architecting and managing event-driven systems and extensive background job workflows with reliability features such as retries, duplicate handling, and data backfills.
- Deep familiarity with AWS services including Aurora/RDS, SQS/EventBridge, and Lambda or ECS for scalable cloud infrastructure.
- Experience integrating with external APIs, preferably Shopify, Meta, and Google platforms.
- Comfortable using AI-driven development tools and test frameworks, incorporating automated testing as an integral part of the development lifecycle.
- Highly organized, with a problem-solving orientation and independent prioritization skills in a dynamic environment.
- Effective communicator capable of translating complex data issues into clear information for non-technical stakeholders.
- Habits of transparency and documentation, demonstrating a commitment to architectural documentation and public collaborative work.
Why Join Us?
- Collaborate with a tight-knit, experienced team tackling complex technical challenges that directly impact customer success.
- Assume real ownership of the platform’s core data infrastructure affecting critical business decisions.
- Work in a small yet influential team where your technical choices significantly shape the product.
- Participate in an innovative AI-first engineering culture, contributing to the creation of intelligent workflows and safety measures.
- Witness direct outcomes of your contributions through close interactions with product teams and customers.
- Engage in a rapidly scaling, results-oriented work environment.
