Job description
About Deputy
Deputy is a global SaaS workforce management company with offices in Sydney, Melbourne, San Francisco, and London, alongside remote employees in the United States. Our platform supports over 1.5 million workers and 375,000 workplaces spanning more than 100 countries. As a newly minted Unicorn with backing from major global investors, we focus on transforming the working experience for hourly workers — a vast segment often overlooked by traditional workplace technology.
Our mission is to enhance the work environment for frontline employees such as baristas, nurses, cleaners, and delivery drivers by providing tools that empower both businesses and their employees to thrive through increased profitability, compliance, productivity, and engagement.
Your Role
As part of Deputy's AI Scheduling team, you will contribute to one of the most widely used features in our product, where billions of shifts have been created. This team focuses on integrating AI and automation into the scheduling process to help managers create compliant, cost-effective schedules at scale. This product is mature and essential to the business with plenty of opportunities for innovation, including modernizing workflows, scaling performance for larger customers, and pioneering AI-driven simplifications.
This senior engineering position is predominantly hands-on with no direct leadership responsibilities. You will design, develop, and implement significant features collaboratively within your squad, own projects, and identify upcoming challenges worth addressing.
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical architecture and development of squad projects from conception to deployment and ongoing maintenance.
- Deliver features in incremental, well-tested portions while proactively managing risks to avoid unexpected issues.
- Collaborate closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to translate customer needs into impactful features.
- Gain deep expertise in the Scheduling product’s architecture to inform sound technical decision-making.
- Balance the trade-offs between rapid delivery and maintaining Scheduling’s speed, reliability, and scalability for enterprise customers.
- Enhance the product's performance, security, reliability, and maintainability in a multi-tenant environment serving a global user base.
- Use design reviews, incident analyses, and small prototypes to support decisions with evidence.
- Set high standards in code reviews to help teammates improve their work.
- Mentor fellow engineers, encouraging a culture where challenging ideas and learning from mistakes are welcomed.
- Experiment with AI-assisted development tools, critically assessing their effectiveness and limitations.
- Establish best practices for reviewing, testing, monitoring, and documenting AI-generated code to ensure quality and security.
- When implementing AI-driven features for customers, plan carefully for evaluation, guardrails, cost-efficiency, latency, and graceful degradation.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum of 4 years experience as a backend software engineer, with a track record of taking features from initial design to production rollout.
- Proven ability to operate customer-facing applications balancing delivery speed, reliability, and maintainability.
- Experience designing APIs (RESTful or RPC) and developing services with strong monitoring and observability.
- Capability to lead or contribute to technical design discussions, communicating decisions effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfort working with Product and Design teams on loosely defined problems, finding pragmatic pathways forward.
- Familiarity with AI coding tools used in development, maintaining a critical review mindset similar to evaluating peer code.
Preferred Experience
- Developing and maintaining distributed, cloud-native or scalable multi-tenant SaaS products.
- Designing resilient systems spanning multiple services, event-driven architectures, and large relational or NoSQL databases.
- Deploying large language model (LLM) backed or agentic AI features in production environments.
- Experience in workforce management, scheduling, or comparable operationally complex products.
- Proficiency with PHP or Go in production, along with technologies such as protobuf, gRPC, MySQL, Redis, DynamoDB, SQS, and Elasticsearch.
Technical Environment
The technology stack includes PHP, Go, and Python running on AWS infrastructure. While technical depth and adaptability are prioritized over a perfect technology match, familiarity with these tools is advantageous.
Benefits and Perks
- Flexible working arrangements including remote work with a stipend to support home office setup.
- Participation in the Employee Share Ownership Plan (ESOP) to own a stake in Deputy.
- Paid parental leave policies to support families.
- Group Salary Continuance Insurance for employee protection.
- Access to an Employee Assistance Program for wellness support.
- Additional leave options including study leave, celebration days, and volunteering opportunities.
- Engagement in global working groups aimed at fostering collaboration, belonging, and connection.
- Creative outlets such as annual hackathons.
- Novated leasing options for electric vehicles, internet reimbursements, and more.
Diversity and Inclusion
Deputy values equal opportunity and believes diversity and inclusiveness drive innovation. Our global team includes members from diverse cultural backgrounds, and we actively welcome a variety of perspectives and expertise.
