Job description
About The Role
The global market for data management software is forecasted to reach $137.6 billion by 2026. MongoDB leads this innovation as a pioneering modern data platform and the first database provider to go public in over two decades. Join our team to contribute to groundbreaking developments that empower developers worldwide to create impactful applications.
The Storage Layer Services Team is currently redesigning the MongoDB Cloud Storage Layer. As a newly formed group central to the next generation of MongoDB Cloud Storage Architecture, we focus on building efficient, multi-tenant distributed storage services. These services enhance our current cloud storage and support a broader range of customer needs. We seek experienced Senior Engineers to become foundational members, actively shaping a multi-year strategic roadmap.
Our team prides itself on fostering an inclusive, diverse, and collaborative culture. If you're passionate about applying distributed systems principles to develop essential storage functionalities for a leading database, this is the place for you. We offer a hybrid work model based in Sydney and invite you to help redefine possibilities for developers, architects, and database professionals.
Candidate Profile
- At least five years of experience programming, debugging, and optimizing distributed and concurrent software systems.
- Solid understanding of systems fundamentals, particularly multi-threaded programming and performance profiling.
- Practical experience working with distributed systems.
- Demonstrated capability in developing, deploying, and managing multi-tenant cloud services focusing on operational excellence.
- Knowledge of database internals or expertise in building critical components of data processing systems.
- Experience developing high-performance software with sensitivity to operational metrics.
- Working with large backend or compiled codebases, preferably using Rust or C/C++.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a closely related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong oral and written technical communication skills with a collaborative mindset.
- Effective time management abilities to realistically evaluate project scopes.
- An interest or experience in high-availability systems theory and practice; an advanced degree such as M.Sc. or Ph.D. in this area is considered advantageous.
Position Expectations
- Create secure, cloud-native, multi-tenant storage solutions that deliver high performance, automatic failover, and continuous uptime.
- Develop and maintain production-grade applications in Rust, and participate in operational on-call rotations.
- Identify test failures and performance degradations, then develop solutions to address them.
- Lead major development projects and cross-team initiatives, managing both technical and project responsibilities.
- Design, implement, test, and support new features within Storage Layer Services while contributing to the service's operational excellence.
- Work closely with Product Management and Engineering leadership to establish product roadmaps aligned with company strategy.
Success Milestones
- Within the first month: Grasp the core architecture of MongoDB Cloud Storage and resolve initial bugs.
- By three months: Actively contribute to Rust development for a project planned for the initial release, engage in code reviews, and participate in design discussions for new features.
- Within six months: Lead feature development initiatives and mentor incoming engineers on the team.
