Job description

About the Company

Warner Bros. Discovery is a leading entertainment company known for its expansive portfolio of iconic content and beloved brands. Their team includes creative professionals and technology experts who produce and support globally distributed content across multiple platforms.

Job Overview

The Dalton team is responsible for developing and maintaining backend services essential for subscriptions, commerce, and partner integrations on streaming platforms. These high-throughput, event-driven systems operate at scale on AWS infrastructure.

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer specializing in backend development to build, operate, and improve Java-based cloud-native services. This individually-contributor role involves owning complex features end-to-end, influencing technical direction, and mentoring junior engineers, but does not include formal people management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain backend services in Java using Spring Boot.
  • Take full ownership of delivering sophisticated backend functionality from initial design through to production support.
  • Build and enhance asynchronous, event-driven architectures leveraging AWS messaging services.
  • Design and maintain RESTful APIs and service integrations supporting internal platform capabilities.
  • Utilize AWS services such as SNS, SQS, and DynamoDB to build resilient, scalable distributed systems.
  • Deploy and maintain backend applications across multiple AWS regions to ensure availability and fault tolerance.
  • Engage in architectural discussions and contribute to team technical decision-making.
  • Conduct thorough code reviews to uphold standards of quality, maintainability, and correctness.
  • Mentor mid-level and junior engineers through code reviews, design consultations, and paired programming.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and lead resolution of production issues.
  • Identify areas to reduce technical debt while improving performance, reliability, and operational ease.
  • Document design decisions and operational procedures to enhance team transparency and effectiveness.

Required Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience developing backend applications in Java.
  • At least 5 years hands-on expertise with Java frameworks such as Spring Boot.
  • Experience designing and managing service-oriented or microservice architectures in production.
  • Strong knowledge of SQL databases including schema design, query tuning, indexing, and transaction management.
  • Demonstrated capability to independently deliver complex backend solutions through to production support.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, asynchronous processing, and backend engineering best practices.
  • Proven track record working in agile and collaborative team environments.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services including SNS, SQS, and DynamoDB is preferred.
  • Experience deploying and operating services across multiple AWS regions is advantageous.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration/continuous deployment pipelines and cloud-native deployment methodologies is a plus.
  • Experience supporting live production services via on-call rotations is preferred.
  • Knowledge of monitoring, logging, and alerting practices for distributed backend systems is appreciated.
