Senior Server Administrator

Role Overview

The Senior Server Administrator is entrusted with the design, management, upkeep, security, and continual enhancement of the company's server and IT infrastructure systems. This position ensures that infrastructure services remain secure, robust, highly available, and in harmony with business needs.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee administration and maintenance of Windows and/or Linux server systems across physical and virtual platforms.
• Manage server hardware, operating systems, virtualization environments, storage solutions, and related infrastructure components.
• Monitor system performance, capacity, availability, and health proactively, identifying and addressing potential concerns.
• Build, configure, upgrade, migrate, and retire servers in compliance with organizational standards.
• Maintain precise records of infrastructure configurations, documentation, and procedural manuals.
• Optimize platforms for availability, performance, and resilience.
• Deliver senior-level technical support for infrastructure-related incidents, service requests, and problem resolution.
• Troubleshoot intricate issues concerning servers, operating systems, networking, storage, and infrastructure.
• Participate in on-call or after-hour support rotations as necessary.
• Lead or assist in resolving major incidents, providing root-cause analysis and corrective measures.
• Collaborate closely with service desk, network, security, application, and other IT teams to address cross-functional challenges.
• Safeguard server security aligned with organizational policies and industry standards, managing patching, vulnerability mitigation, antivirus/endpoint protection, and security configurations.
• Support compliance audits, security assessments, and infrastructure risk evaluations.
• Implement access control measures, privileged access protocols, and server hardening processes.
• Work alongside cybersecurity teams to investigate and resolve security incidents within infrastructure.
• Administer and monitor backup and recovery solutions, regularly testing restoration and disaster recovery strategies.
• Contribute to infrastructure disaster recovery and business continuity plans ensuring critical services meet recovery targets.
• Lead or engage in projects involving server upgrades, migrations, cloud adoption, virtualization, and technology refresh initiatives.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and suggest improvements to infrastructure services.
• Pursue automation of routine tasks to boost operational efficiency.
• Establish and maintain technical standards, procedures, and best practices.
• Participate in capacity planning and formulating future infrastructure strategies.
• Foster collaboration between internal IT departments, business stakeholders, and external vendors.
• Provide clear technical guidance to both technical teams and non-technical audiences.
• Assist with supplier management, technical evaluations, and initiatives aimed at service enhancement.
• Mentor and guide junior infrastructure team members.

Essential Skills & Experience

• Extensive experience in senior server or infrastructure administration roles.
• Proficient management of Windows Server and/or Linux environments.
• Strong expertise with Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, and fundamental infrastructure services.
• Experience with virtualization platforms such as VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V.
• Solid understanding of server hardware, storage, networking, and overall infrastructure design.
• Background with enterprise backup and disaster recovery methodologies.
• Advanced knowledge of server security, patching, vulnerability management, and system hardening.
• Adept at diagnosing complex infrastructure problems and conducting root-cause analysis.
• Familiarity with ITIL principles and IT service management frameworks.
• Experience using monitoring and infrastructure management tools.
• Strong skills in technical documentation and communication.
• Capability to work independently and lead resolution of complex technical challenges.

Desirable Skills

• Experience with cloud platforms including Microsoft Azure, AWS, or similar.
• Skills in scripting and automation using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or equivalents.
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code and configuration management systems.
• Knowledge of Microsoft 365 and hybrid infrastructure setups.
• Experience with enterprise-grade storage technologies.
• Understanding of high-availability solutions and disaster recovery architectures.
• Relevant certifications such as Microsoft, VMware, Linux, ITIL, or cloud-related qualifications.
