Senior Scala Engineer

Overview

We are looking for a seasoned Senior Scala Engineer to join our globally oriented company focused on creating scalable, reliable, secure, and high-performing software platforms. The role involves working remotely from the United Arab Emirates in a full-time capacity. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product, Engineering, Data, Cloud, Security, and Operations to build robust digital systems, distributed applications, and services that drive critical business functions.

Primary Responsibilities

• Architect, develop, test, deploy, and maintain scalable production-grade software primarily using Scala.
• Design and build reliable and maintainable Scala applications and backend services such as APIs, microservices, and data-processing workflows.
• Implement functional programming concepts, idiomatic Scala usage, immutable data structures, type-safety, and concurrency using appropriate libraries and frameworks.
• Develop RESTful and gRPC service interfaces, event-driven and asynchronous processing systems integrating messaging platforms like Kafka.
• Design and optimize scalable distributed systems and high-throughput data pipelines using Scala and frameworks like Apache Spark.
• Work with relational and NoSQL databases to create efficient schemas, queries, and caching strategies to ensure robust data access and performance.
• Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, retry and backpressure mechanisms within service architectures.
• Lead secure application development by implementing authentication, authorization, secure coding practices, and collaborating with security teams to address vulnerabilities.
• Author comprehensive unit, integration, and end-to-end tests, improve automated coverage, and conduct code reviews to uphold quality standards.
• Investigate and resolve production issues through root cause analysis, monitoring metrics, logs, and distributed tracing to improve system observability.
• Partner with DevOps and platform teams to enhance deployment pipelines (CI/CD), manage builds with sbt, and support deployment in containerized and cloud environments like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
• Enhance JVM performance, monitor resource usage, optimize garbage collection, and apply profiling tools to identify bottlenecks.
• Develop reusable libraries, establish coding standards, manage dependencies, and drive modernization projects involving legacy Scala or Java codebases.
• Collaborate with stakeholders such as Product Managers, Architects, and Engineers across disciplines to define technical requirements, estimate efforts, and deliver reliable software solutions.
• Engage in continuous learning to stay abreast of advancements in Scala, JVM, cloud technologies, and distributed systems.
• Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and spearhead initiatives to improve engineering productivity, code quality, and operational efficiency.

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Extensive experience developing production Scala applications with mastery of Scala syntax, type systems, collections, pattern matching, traits, and implicits.
• Strong background in functional programming principles such as pure functions, higher-order functions, algebraic data types, and effectful programming.
• Proven expertise with Scala 2 and/or Scala 3 in production, including concurrency, asynchronous programming, and distributed systems.
• Deep understanding of immutable programming, type-safe designs, and scalable service architectures.
• Experience in building cloud-native applications, integrating with databases, messaging middleware, and cloud services from providers like AWS and Azure.
