About Roblox and the Role
Roblox is a platform where millions engage daily to explore, create, play, learn, and connect through immersive 3D digital experiences. Developers and creators worldwide build these experiences. Roblox aims to enable this community to bring any vision to life, shaping how people interact globally across devices. The company is on a mission to connect a billion users with positive and respectful interactions.
Position Overview
We seek a seasoned Senior Engineering Manager to lead a talented team focused on advancing rendering technology. The rendering group plays a vital role in delivering visual experiences to millions across varying devices. This internal engine team controls the entire rendering stack, including lighting, materials, terrain, VFX, and server infrastructure.
Roblox faces the unique challenge of scaling high-end visuals down to low-end mobile devices while allowing creators from professionals to newcomers to express their vision effectively. This position directly impacts the technology reaching hundreds of millions globally.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership and mentorship to a top-tier engineering group, specializing in pillars such as the core rendering pipeline, culling, graphics API backends (Vulkan, Metal, Direct3D, agc, OpenGL), or lighting and shading systems.
- Engage hands-on as a technical leader by guiding architectural decisions, algorithm selection, and ensuring system stability and performance.
- Collaborate with your team and peers to set and deliver the vision for Roblox's core rendering technologies, anticipating future trends aligned with company goals.
- Promote an innovative and open culture that encourages continuous improvement and values diverse ideas.
- Expand the rendering organization by recruiting and retaining outstanding engineering talent.
Required Experience and Skills
- Minimum 15 years in rendering or graphics engineering with a strong grasp of either low-level rendering pipelines, GPU architectures (ideally including mobile), and graphics APIs (Vulkan, Metal, DirectX), or modern lighting techniques such as PBR, shadowing, global illumination, and advanced shading languages.
- Over 5 years in technical leadership or engineering management, successfully building and mentoring high-performing engineering teams.
- Proficient in C++ programming, capable of deep technical problem solving, guiding design discussions, and debugging complex systems.
- Experience delivering high-performance graphical features or real-time 3D applications, particularly in game engines.
- Excellent communication skills to effectively convey complex technical topics to varied audiences and collaborate cross-functionally.
- Passionate about solving the rendering challenges specific to the Roblox platform.
Additional Information
The role is based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The salary range starts between CAD 330,810 and CAD 394,000 annually, though actual compensation depends on multiple factors including experience and market conditions. Equity and benefits eligibility are also included for full-time employees.
Work is onsite Tuesday through Thursday with optional presence Monday and Friday unless otherwise specified.
Roblox is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and provides accommodations during recruitment for qualifying disabilities or religious needs.
