Job description

Role Overview

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at happyhotel, you will focus on enhancing forecasting, pricing strategies, and product insights through data-driven innovations in the Pricing & Revenue space. You'll develop analyses and models that have a measurable impact on the product by ensuring rigorous evaluation, a robust data foundation, and practical implementation. This role entails close collaboration with Product and Engineering teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Continuously develop and refine forecasting and pricing models as well as data-driven decision rules, emphasizing practical impact and methodical pragmatism.
  • Analyze time series, demand indicators, and diverse data sources; design clean features and labels to prevent data leakage.
  • Oversee evaluation processes utilizing backtesting, reliable metrics, and segmentation; support holdouts and A/B testing while monitoring consistency between offline and online model performance.
  • Implement machine learning engineering best practices, including backtesting, reproducibility, and version control, prioritizing engineering quality over ad-hoc notebook solutions.
  • Create dashboards and reports to provide transparent views of model and business KPIs, maintaining high data quality standards.
  • Advance reproducible workflows featuring versioning, robust pipelines, and meaningful tests; automate recurring analyses and evaluation runs.

Required Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of experience in Data Science or applied machine learning engineering, preferably within product or business environments.
  • Exceptional SQL skills combined with a strong intuition for data quality, debugging, and consistent metric generation.
  • Proficient in writing clean Python code and producing transparent analyses; experience with production-level setups is highly advantageous.
  • Solid understanding of experimental design, including awareness of bias, data leakage, guardrails, and alignment between offline and online scenarios.
  • Ability to take full ownership of assigned projects, applying an 80/20 pragmatic approach while maintaining reliability and clear communication.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset aimed at driving meaningful progress and innovation.
  • Fluency in German and good command of English are required.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Domain knowledge in revenue management or dynamic pricing, especially in sectors such as hospitality, travel, e-commerce, or mobility.
  • Familiarity with seasonality, events, lead times, and customer segmentation patterns.
  • Experience working with analytics engineering or data warehouse tools like dbt, Snowflake, or Metabase.
  • Practical knowledge of MLOps tools and cloud infrastructure such as AWS is a plus.
