About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer based in Kolkata to join our Backend Engineering / Platform Services team. This full-time position focuses on designing and operating secure, scalable RESTful APIs deployed on AWS. The role involves close collaboration with cloud and platform engineers to shape cloud architecture and deliver robust backend solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and design REST APIs in Java following clean architecture principles and scalable design patterns with comprehensive test coverage.
- Manage AWS API Gateway integrations including routing, throttling, quotas, and request/response transformations.
- Implement API access control features such as API key management, usage plans, and secure onboarding of clients.
- Establish strong logging, observability, and monitoring solutions for APIs using structured logs, correlation IDs, metrics, and tracing.
- Create cloud-native backend services deployed on AWS Lambda or container-based environments, ensuring secure configuration and secret management.
- Integrate backend services with PostgreSQL and SQL databases, handling PL/SQL stored procedures and queries effectively.
- Implement data encryption for data at rest and in transit, maintaining adherence to security best practices.
- Participate in cloud architecture design discussions addressing scalability, resilience, and cost efficiency.
- Develop and maintain automated unit and integration tests supporting CI/CD pipelines.
- Maintain high standards for Git usage, including branching strategies, code reviews, and commit hygiene.
- Collaborate with Product, QA, and DevOps teams to deliver features reliably and manage production issues with thorough root cause analyses.
- Document API contracts (OpenAPI/Swagger), version strategies, and operational guidelines.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Strong practical experience in Java 11+ and backend engineering fundamentals.
- Proven ability to build RESTful APIs using Java frameworks such as Spring Boot, Spring JDBC, and Spring Security.
- Hands-on experience with AWS API Gateway including request routing, throttling, usage plans, and API key administration.
- Solid understanding of PostgreSQL and SQL, including PL/SQL stored procedure development and data manipulation.
- Experience implementing encryption solutions for data at rest (e.g., AWS KMS, column-level encryption) and in transit (TLS/mTLS).
- Proficient with Git workflows, including branching models, code reviews, and repository management.
- Familiarity with logging and monitoring tools like CloudWatch, Datadog, or ELK for production environments.
- Good knowledge of cloud concepts such as scalability, high availability, fault tolerance, security, and cost management.
- Strong software engineering practices including clean code, automated testing, and thorough documentation.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with authentication/authorization mechanisms such as OAuth2/JWT, Spring Security, AWS Cognito, custom auth, or mutual TLS.
- Understanding of distributed system concepts including idempotency, retries, circuit breakers, rate limiting, and caching.
- Exposure to AWS services like Lambda, ECS, RDS, Secrets Manager, and CloudWatch related to API management.
- Basic familiarity with infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform.
- Experience creating and managing OpenAPI/Swagger specifications and API versioning.
- Knowledge of CI/CD pipelines and modern release strategies, including blue/green or canary deployments.
Desirable Additional Expertise
- Performance tuning skills including JVM profiling, load testing, and basic JVM internals.
- Experience with event-driven architectures and messaging platforms such as Kafka, Kinesis, or SNS.
- Background in designing multi-tenant APIs and handling usage metering.
- Knowledge of regulated environments, audit requirements, and rigorous security compliance standards.
Experience and Education
The role typically requires 6 to 10 or more years of backend development experience. Applicants should hold a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or possess equivalent practical experience.
