Senior Investment Manager

Overview

The Senior Investment Manager will be centrally involved in guiding investment choices for major flexible and low-carbon energy developments within SSE Thermal Development. This role requires leadership in financial analysis and business case creation for a portfolio of complex projects in an evolving commercial and policy landscape, ensuring robust investment decisions.

Location and Work Pattern

This position requires spending approximately half of the working week across key UK locations—London, Aberdeen, Glasgow, or Perth. The role is permanent, full-time with flexible working options available.

Key Responsibilities

• Direct discounted cash flow (DCF) modelling and investment appraisals for large-scale energy and infrastructure projects from early concepts through final investment approvals.
• Critically assess project assumptions, key value drivers, risks, and uncertainties using detailed financial analyses, scenario planning, and sensitivity analyses to provide clear investment advice.
• Lead and mentor a team of analysts by setting clear targets, fostering career progression, and nurturing an inclusive environment that encourages excellence.
• Establish strong relationships with diverse stakeholders, influencing and constructively challenging to enhance project results and investment decisions.
• Implement and refine analytical standards and procedures including model reviews, assumption tracking, data governance, and delivering consistent transparent outputs.
• Expand the team’s expertise in project finance, collaborating with corporate finance teams and external advisors on financing structures and project-financed developments.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive experience with discounted cash flow modelling, business case development, and valuation of substantial capital projects, preferably within energy, infrastructure, or utilities sectors.
• Exceptional commercial insight with the ability to evaluate and challenge market, regulatory, technical, and commercial inputs behind financial models.
• Proficient at distilling complex financial and commercial data into straightforward, evidence-based recommendations for senior leadership.
• Demonstrated success in preparing strong business cases and navigating projects through rigorous investment governance.
• Proven leadership experience with a commitment to coaching, talent development, and fostering team success.
• Skilled stakeholder manager capable of influencing decisions, questioning assumptions, and building trusted cross-functional partnerships.
• Experience or interest in project finance and infrastructure finance, specifically debt-funded projects, is highly advantageous.
