Job description

About Xero and the Team

Xero’s mission is to make managing a business seamless and beautiful by equipping small businesses with cutting-edge technology. Our Reporting Platform is a vital component used globally by millions, delivering over 150 reports such as Profit & Loss and Revenue statements to users, accountants, and bookkeepers alike.

This engineering team is distributed between Wellington and Vancouver, and we are looking for a Senior Full Stack Engineer to spearhead technical projects, modernize legacy frameworks, and enhance engineering maturity within large-scale platform systems.

Role Overview

The position requires a balanced approach, dedicating around half your time to hands-on development and project delivery alongside experienced engineers, and the other half to strategic efforts like technical exploration, incident resolution, and long-term planning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead architecture and development of new product features within the Reporting platform, ensuring a harmony between rapid delivery, high quality, and robust architecture across complex systems.
  • Drive the modernization of legacy .NET frameworks, managing safe large-scale deployment and smooth traffic transitions.
  • Leverage opportunities to integrate Artificial Intelligence into reporting products and workflows, enhancing both product capabilities and developer experience.
  • Take charge of incident management, actively participate in on-call rotations, and promote strong testing and continuous delivery practices.
  • Mentor and coach engineering team members, improve planning over multiple quarters, and cultivate an inclusive, collaborative engineering culture.

What You Will Bring

  • Experience with operating large-scale, high-volume transaction systems, particularly in fintech, banking, SaaS, or medical technology sectors.
  • Strong full-stack development skills, especially with .NET / C#, React, and SQL; experience in modernizing legacy systems is highly valued.
  • Technical maturity and ownership mentality, demonstrated through proactive actions, effective communication, and accountability for end-to-end delivery.
  • Ability to collaborate cross-functionally, lead technical discovery sessions, dismantle silos, and align diverse stakeholders across multi-quarter projects.

Why Work With Us?

  • Make a significant impact by working on essential software products relied upon daily by millions of small business customers worldwide.
  • Opportunity to grow professionally and lead pioneering AI initiatives within our product environment.
  • Enjoy flexible working arrangements, with a preference for Wellington but openness to fully remote work within New Zealand.
  • Join a values-driven company that emphasizes teamwork, beauty, action, humanity, and collaboration.

Additional Information

We invite applicants from diverse backgrounds and encourage you to apply even if your qualifications don’t perfectly align; your skills, enthusiasm, and unique perspective are what matter most to us.
