Job description
About Musly Club
Musly Club is a private members' club focused on individuals with Muslim roots, fostering meaningful connections and experiences both digitally and in real life. We are looking for a senior founding AI engineer to drive the next phase of product development, working closely with the founder, fractional CTO, and engineering team. This role involves hands-on responsibility in full stack engineering, AI, and product ownership.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop intelligent member recommendations, AI-powered chat features, concierge services, travel networking, and event suggestions.
- Create data and feedback loops linking member onboarding, behaviors, conversations, connections, events, and real-world results.
- Enhance AI chat capabilities.
- Build internal tools to analyze member demand, city trends, emerging segments, and performance metrics.
- Develop intelligence systems to identify suitable members for events and partners.
- Design events platform incorporating AI-based seating arrangements and invitation management.
- Utilize data from invitations, attendance, and feedback to improve experiences.
- Build APIs, data pipelines, models, evaluations, and interfaces for scalable, reliable product operation.
Candidate Profile
- Experience delivering products in early-stage startup environments.
- Comprehensive full stack skills, capable of owning features from backend data models to frontend user experience.
- Strong communication skills.
- Hands-on expertise with AI, machine learning, and large language models (LLMs), including production deployment, performance evaluation, and iterative improvement using real data.
- Knowledge or readiness to apply machine learning techniques to recommendation, ranking, or matching systems, particularly those requiring meaningful network connections.
- Ability to move quickly, exercise excellent product judgment, and translate ideas into functional deliverables.
- Experience developing products available in multiple countries.
- Have contributed to building products scaled for over 500,000 users.
- Desire to embrace the pace and responsibility characteristic of a small founding team.
Success Metrics
Within the first 90 days, the engineer will transform existing data into actionable intelligence for improved member recommendations, deeper understanding of user behavior, smarter event invitations, and insightful analytics to guide product decisions. Ownership of core product and technical infrastructure will be critical as Musly scales across cities.
Technical Qualifications
AI and Machine Learning
- Proven track record shipping large language model (LLM) features with robust prompt design, structured output handling, tool integration, retrieval augmented generation (RAG), and embeddings.
- Experience managing multiple model providers (e.g., OpenAI, Anthropic, AWS Bedrock) optimizing for cost, latency, rate limits, and fallback mechanisms.
- Established evaluation methods including labeled datasets, offline metrics, calibrated human judgment (LLM-as-judge), and A/B testing.
- Familiarity with recommendation, ranking, and matching algorithms including candidate generation, ranking, cold start, and exploration; experience with reciprocal (two-sided) matching is advantageous.
- Capability to leverage implicit feedback signals such as event outcomes, position bias, and feedback loops.
- Pragmatic approach recognizing when LLMs are inappropriate, with experience training and deploying classical models (e.g., gradient boosting, logistic regression) on tabular data.
- Designing human-in-the-loop systems where reviewers correct model outputs to improve models continually.
Backend and Data Engineering
- Expertise in TypeScript and Node.js, with experience building and maintaining production Express (or similar) APIs.
- In-depth knowledge of MongoDB including schema design, indexing, aggregation pipelines, query optimization, and working with vector search technologies like Atlas Vector Search.
- Experience creating real-time systems using WebSockets or Socket.IO, as well as Redis for caching and pub/sub messaging.
- Proficient in designing data pipelines and event tracking systems with batch processing, scheduled jobs, and robust data flows from product events to machine learning models.
Frontend and Mobile Development
- Production experience with React. Ability or willingness to work with React Native and Expo is a strong plus.
Infrastructure and Production Quality
- Hands-on experience with AWS services such as EKS, S3, Lambda, CloudFront, plus Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience deploying, debugging, and scaling applications with multi-region considerations for latency, data consistency, and deployment strategies.
- Commitment to writing well-tested, maintainable, and observable code. Experience in on-call rotations and handling production incidents.
Privacy and Security
- Knowledge of securing sensitive personal data, including private messages and profile information.
- Understanding of GDPR compliance.
- Designing AI systems with safety measures, including guardrails, content moderation, and data privacy safeguards for third-party model interactions.
Additional Desirable Experience
- Background in community, social, dating, or membership platforms focusing on mutual value in connections.
- Experience managing events or real-life experiences addressing invitations, capacity, seating logistics, and attendance.
- Working with Stripe subscriptions, Twilio, OneSignal, or other messaging and notification services.
- Familiarity with Next.js and Tailwind CSS for admin tools and dashboards.
- Experience with product analytics tools such as Mixpanel and experiment design.
- Working knowledge of localization issues including time zones and data residency regulations across different countries.
- Proficiency with AI-assisted coding tools and defining effective team practices around them.
Application Requirement
Please include in your application a brief description of something you designed or fixed outside of your professional work, regardless of complexity.
