About GitHub
GitHub is the premier platform for agent-driven software development powered by Copilot, enabling teams to build, scale, and deliver secure software. It serves over 180 million developers worldwide, including more than 90% of Fortune 100 companies, with over 77,000 organizations utilizing GitHub Copilot.
Location
This position is remote, based in the United Kingdom.
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Engineering Manager to lead and expand a geographically distributed engineering team spanning Europe, the US, and Canada within GitHub's code scanning division. This team is dedicated to enhancing software security and quality by identifying actionable issues early in development and integrating their resolution into developer workflows.
Team Focus and Products
The core product is the CodeQL detection engine, GitHub’s semantic code analysis technology powering Code Scanning features used daily by hundreds of thousands of developers as part of Advanced Security. CodeQL conducts deep static analysis in 10 languages such as C/C++, C#, Go, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript, Kotlin, Python, Ruby, and Swift, through maintaining extractors and semantic libraries for each language, ensuring consistent features and timely language updates.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Shape and oversee the technical roadmap aligned with product objectives, prioritizing tasks and integrating new technologies and methodologies.
- Promote cross-team collaboration by managing communications, identifying interdependencies, and resolving conflicts for smooth product integration.
- Lead talent development through performance management and keeping skillsets updated with industry trends and best practices.
- Guide architectural decisions to build scalable, secure, and observable systems fulfilling business and technical needs.
- Encourage data-driven development and experimentation to iterate rapidly on solutions.
- Drive engineering quality with automation, tooling, and standardization covering deployment, testing, and operational practices.
- Take ownership of incident management and reliability to meet service-level objectives and enforce improvements via postmortem analyses.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum six years in software engineering or a related technical field with demonstrated success building and maintaining production software using one or more of these languages: C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, Go, Ruby, Rust, or Python.
- Alternatively, equivalent education and experience combinations are acceptable, such as an Associate’s degree plus five years, Bachelor's plus four years, Master’s plus two years, or PhD in relevant technical disciplines.
- At least one year of management experience leading teams.
Preferred Qualifications
- Over two years of experience in areas including developer tooling (compilers, static analyzers, debuggers, IDE extensions), software security, and machine learning applied to source code analysis.
- Experience leading distributed teams across multiple time zones with responsibilities including hiring, retention, performance calibration, and mentoring.
- Strong skills in stakeholder collaboration across engineering, product, and design groups to align priorities and decision-making.
- Background or knowledge in compilers, program analysis, programming languages, logic programming, and database query languages such as SQL, Prolog, Datalog, or Kusto Query Language.
- Familiarity with integrating CI/CD workflows, such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins, and managing user-facing software's availability, observability, and security at scale.
Values and Leadership Principles
- Customer-centric approach
- Iterative "ship to learn" mindset
- Commitment to continuous growth and learning
- Ownership of outcomes
- Collaboration and inclusivity
- Emphasis on diversity and inclusion
- Managerial essentials: modeling behavior, coaching, and caring
