Job Overview

The Senior Engineer I is responsible for managing engineering activities within a designated organizational unit, program, project, or task. This role involves planning, conducting, and overseeing engineering design reviews and analysis for significant projects or multiple smaller, less complex projects. The nature of these assignments demands proficient application of established engineering knowledge within a specialized technical or scientific discipline. The work requires creative problem-solving and collaboration across various functions.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead engineering personnel daily, delegating projects and overseeing progress to ensure high-quality work and positive client relationships.
• Innovate solutions to technical challenges and propose improvements to processes, methods, or design as necessary.
• Supervise the technical accuracy, coherence, and punctuality of all assigned projects.
• Apply comprehensive and varied engineering expertise across multiple technical domains; conduct engineering assessments and review colleagues' work, providing guidance and training when needed.
• Contribute to the evolution and modification of Rules, advising the team on their correct application and interpretation.
• Draft formal client communications adhering to established protocols.
• Maintain internal and external collaboration with other engineering professionals.
• Monitor the performance, development potential, and training needs of engineers; inform management about staffing requirements.
• Support development of qualification documents, proposals, bids, and presentations.

Qualifications and Experience

Educational Requirements: A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, or a related field is required; a Master’s degree is preferred.

Experience Requirements: University graduates must have at least five years of relevant experience. For candidates with Hull-related expertise, a minimum of ten years in shipyards, design or consulting offices, shipping/oil companies, or classification societies, or two years as Engineer II, is needed, alongside proficiency in engineering software and knowledge of the Finite Element Method. Professional or chartered engineering licensure is essential.

For Machinery-focused candidates, a B.S. in Marine, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, or similar discipline plus ten years of related experience or two years as Engineer II is required, with a seagoing engineering or professional/chartered engineer license.

• Excellent interpersonal skills to maintain client relations and lead teams effectively.
• Strong analytical skills for tackling complex engineering challenges.
• Planning expertise for efficient scheduling of projects.
• Proficient verbal and written communication in English.
• Ability to acquire working knowledge of ABS’s Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.

Additional Information

Holding a professional or chartered engineer license is highly desirable. Typically reports to a Principal Engineer, though reporting lines may vary by assignment. This role has no direct reports.
