Job description
About the Role
Join a focused team dedicated to creating tools, platforms, and best practices that enable engineers across Xero to effectively implement AI solutions. This position entails full ownership of projects from initial experimentation through to production, including writing runbooks, establishing monitoring, and implementing rollback strategies to ensure reliability for daily engineering users.
Role Impact
As a key contributor, you will influence the technical advancement of an internal skills marketplace and an AI tools distribution platform utilized across the engineering organization. You will also liaise directly with cutting-edge technology providers like AWS, Microsoft, and GitHub on unreleased innovations, playing a pivotal role as the team progresses in its AI journey.
Team and Collaboration
The AI Enablement team is part of Engineering Experience, aiming to enhance product engineering teams' AI capabilities through tailored platforms, tools, and hands-on guidance beyond typical toolsets. Though geographically distributed across Melbourne, Sydney, the Sunshine Coast, and Wellington, the team maintains tight collaboration through regular meetings and a cooperative work culture.
Key Responsibilities
- Work primarily with C#, .NET, and AWS technologies, while adopting Python and TypeScript as needed for AI tooling development.
- Design and develop an internal skills marketplace and an AI tools distribution platform supporting Xero's engineering teams.
- Create and promote best practice guidelines for authoring AI agent skills, including those used for automated remediation tasks.
- Collaborate closely with AWS, Microsoft, and GitHub on early-access technology that is not yet publicly available.
Work Environment
You may be based anywhere in Australia or New Zealand. The team operates in a hybrid model, accommodating collaboration across different time zones with regular in-person sessions for planning and teamwork.
Qualifications and Qualities
- Proven hands-on experience in software engineering, ideally involving C#, .NET, and AWS; however, candidates experienced in other stacks who can quickly learn new technologies are welcome.
- Experience building internal tools or platforms that serve and support engineering teams.
- Strong commitment to production readiness, including writing runbooks, establishing monitoring solutions, and planning rollback procedures.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage stakeholders and promote ideas effectively rather than working in isolation.
- Genuine curiosity about AI and agent programming, staying informed about trends and new developments in AI engineering.
- Capability to respectfully challenge decisions and pursue structured, quality-driven learning.
Additional Information
Xero values skill, passion, and unique perspectives over strict experience matches and encourages applications from diverse backgrounds.
