Role Overview

We seek a Senior Developer to join our Open Source Team, focusing on bolstering 1Password's open source initiatives and enhancing developer tools within their workflows through integrations like Agent Hooks and IDE plugins. This role involves technical leadership, from architectural decision-making to executing medium and large projects, covering development through customer support.

Current AI Usage

Our teams integrate AI thoughtfully across development stages to boost speed without sacrificing quality or security. Engineers employ AI-assisted coding tools for faster reviews and early bug detection; product managers use AI to synthesize user research at scale; designers leverage AI-generated mockups for rapid prototyping. Our AI approach emphasizes clear principles, human accountability, and rigorous assessment before deployment.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead and deliver medium-to-large technical projects independently across the full development lifecycle.
• Make architectural decisions ensuring scalability, security, and maintainability of products.
• Develop and enhance integrations such as Agent Hooks across multiple IDEs, creating functional in-IDE tools beyond external documentation links.
• Contribute to roadmap planning by identifying technical risks and opportunities approximately six months ahead and steer execution aligned with team goals.
• Raise code quality standards by spotting deficiencies in testing, documentation, and code quality within public repositories.
• Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Partnerships, Product, UX, and SDK/CLI to translate requirements into actionable development plans.
• Drive initiatives to improve developer experience and resolve customer challenges on supported platforms.
• Foster a collaborative team culture by sharing best practices, providing constructive feedback, and encouraging shared ownership.

Candidate Profile

• Extensive professional experience in software development with proven success owning and delivering significant projects independently.
• Mastery of modern development tools such as Git, IDEs, terminals, debugging, and testing utilities, plus fluency in relevant programming languages with capability to read, write, and review code effectively.
• Expertise in designing extensible and maintainable systems, preferably including developer tooling, IDE extensions, agent integrations, or active open source contributions.
• Proven ability to set technical direction and make architectural choices that uphold security, scalability, and quality.
• Experience engaging publicly with open source communities, maintaining high standards of quality for community-facing repositories.
• Strong interest in agent-assisted development and creating tools that facilitate secure, seamless agent-assisted workflows.
• Excellent communication skills to clearly convey project impacts and progress to engineering, product, and design stakeholders.
• A security-first mindset aligned with 1Password’s principles.

Bonus Qualifications

• Maintaining popular open source projects or leading open source community engagement.
• Familiarity with AI-powered or agentic IDEs and related agent-hook ecosystems.
• Experience contributing to or managing Open Source Program Offices (OSPOs).

Compensation & Benefits

For Canadian residents, annual salaries range from CAD 144,000 to CAD 202,000, including immediate eligibility for comprehensive benefits such as health, dental, retirement savings plans, equity grants, generous paid time off, and participation in incentive programs. Compensation reflects fair market value and internal equity based on experience and skillset.
