Job description
About the Company
Our client tackles the massive global issue of food waste, where approximately 1.3 billion tonnes of food remain unused annually. They offer a machine learning-driven demand forecasting SaaS platform that reduces food waste by up to 30%, simultaneously increasing enterprise revenues. Operating successfully in multiple European markets and trusted by Germany's largest grocery retailers, the company has secured an 8-figure Series A funding round and achieved €2 million in annual recurring revenue, aiming to hit €5 million this year.
Role Overview
We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join the team, focusing on one of mass retail's most challenging machine learning problems: accurately forecasting demand and optimizing inventory management for perishable products despite imperfect stock data. Your work will directly impact reducing food wastage and improving supply chain decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop forecasting models that predict the complete distribution of fresh-food demand along with quantifying uncertainty.
- Create simulation models and ordering algorithms that translate forecasts into actionable purchase orders.
- Ensure data and model quality throughout the entire pipeline, from raw inputs to final orders on supermarket shelves.
- Write efficient, well-tested production code, collaborating daily with AI coding assistants.
- Contribute to setting and maintaining high technical standards and strategic direction.
- Collaborate closely with Customer Success and Engineering teams to enhance performance at individual store levels.
Qualifications
- Proven experience delivering systems where decisions have tangible real-world costs.
- Expertise in probabilistic demand forecasting, stochastic inventory management, or operations research.
- Strong proficiency in Python and SQL for managing large, complex datasets.
- Hands-on knowledge of quantile regression, LightGBM, conformal prediction, and newsvendor models.
- Experience monitoring and evaluating live machine learning pipelines; familiarity with Google Cloud Platform tools such as BigQuery and Vertex AI, as well as dbt and Airflow.
- Comfortable partnering with AI coding assistants on daily coding tasks.
Additional Information
This role offers the unique opportunity to apply advanced data science techniques to a critical sustainability challenge impacting billions worldwide, working with major European retail clients to shape daily inventory decisions.
