Role Summary
This Senior Data Engineer position involves leading the build and operation of a secure, scalable Google Cloud Platform (GCP) data warehouse that supports insightful reporting, automation, AI, and smarter corporate decision-making. The role will be based at the Heathrow office and may include occasional travel to other Menzies offices.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the creation and maintenance of scalable and resilient data pipelines into BigQuery, integrating various data sources including internal systems, APIs, databases, files, webhooks, and event streams.
- Define and implement engineering strategies for GCP components such as BigQuery, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub, Datastream, Cloud Composer/Airflow, Terraform, and infrastructure as code.
- Establish and advocate for high engineering standards covering data modelling, dbt transformations, testing, monitoring, documentation, deployment, version control, and cost management.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into scalable reusable data products combining data from internal and external sources like Companies House, HMRC, Exchange Online, Active Directory, iManage, and Dayshape.
- Incorporate robust data security, governance, and quality controls ensuring compliance with data lineage, GDPR, least-privilege access, and protection of sensitive client, HR, payroll, and financial data.
- Provide technical leadership by reviewing architectures and code, mentoring engineers and analysts, and enhancing the team’s engineering capabilities.
- Enable business value delivery by making data accessible through Power BI, automation workflows, AI-driven agents, and internal applications.
- Assess technology and integration options, advising on build-versus-buy decisions balancing value, security, scalability, supportability, and cost.
- Promote data literacy and enablement across the firm, empowering colleagues to safely and effectively use data.
- Contribute to shaping the Innovation Team’s roadmap focusing on strategic, repeatable data platforms rather than one-off solutions.
Required Skills & Expertise
- Extensive experience (5+ years) in data engineering, analytics engineering, or platform roles, including senior or leadership responsibilities.
- Proficient in SQL and Python with the ability to develop reliable, production-quality data solutions.
- Solid experience working with cloud data warehouses, ideally Google BigQuery, and a comprehensive understanding of the Google Cloud Platform ecosystem.
- Familiarity with modern data engineering tools such as Airflow/Cloud Composer, dbt, Git/GitHub, CI/CD pipelines, and Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code solutions.
- Strong grasp of data modelling, dimensional modelling, orchestration, testing, quality assurance, and operational monitoring designed for scalable, maintainable systems.
- Proven ability to design and maintain production-grade data pipelines handling diverse data inputs like APIs, databases, flat files, webhooks, and messaging queues.
- Deep appreciation of data security, governance frameworks, GDPR compliance, role-based access control, secrets management, and handling of sensitive information.
- Capable of translating ambiguous business needs into clear, pragmatic, and scalable technical solutions balancing short- and long-term objectives.
- Excellent communication skills with a talent for simplifying complex technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders and influencing multi-level decisions.
- Collaborative leadership style fostering knowledge sharing, coaching teammates, and raising engineering standards within the team.
Qualifications & Additional Information
A degree or equivalent experience in computer science, data engineering, software engineering, mathematics, statistics, or related technical fields is advantageous. Certifications in Google Cloud, dbt, or other relevant areas are welcomed but practical experience is paramount.
Experience in professional services, finance, accounting, legal, tax, audit, or other regulated sectors is beneficial but not essential.
This role requires ownership, sound judgment, a problem-solving mindset, and a desire to innovate while maintaining strong attention to quality, security, and risk.
Occasional travel to other Menzies offices for workshops and team engagements is expected.
