At the heart of Halter is data. Our devices continuously stream behavioural, location, and health data from cattle globally. Combined with remote sensing and pasture monitoring, this data provides farmers with smarter operational decisions daily, while internally, production and product analytics data guide our development and scaling efforts.

Role Overview

We seek an experienced Data Engineer with strong backend expertise to join our Data Engineering team. Your focus will be developing reliable and scalable data pipelines that integrate vast data sources, ensure data quality, and support machine learning, product, and platform teams. You will design and maintain systems optimized for high-volume data ingestion and transformation, owning full lifecycle responsibilities to facilitate impactful farming innovations.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain scalable, reliable data pipelines to transport data seamlessly from source to analysis-ready platforms.
• Make informed data modeling decisions with clean schemas and abstractions that accommodate business growth.
• Collaborate closely with ML, product, and platform teams to guarantee data accessibility, accuracy, and timeliness.
• Leverage AI tools to boost pipeline development speed while maintaining clarity and adaptability.
• Implement data quality assurance via validation, monitoring, and alert systems to preempt downstream issues.
• Drive best practices and standards for data engineering with a balance between pragmatic delivery and maintainability.
• Mentor fellow engineers through design discussions, code reviews, and knowledge sharing.
• Stay hands-on and contribute to both data infrastructure and associated data products impacting decision making.
• Enhance data system reliability and freshness, especially at scale and under complex conditions.
• Advance testing approaches, continuous integration/deployment workflows, and infrastructure for data.

Desired Qualifications and Attributes

• Extensive experience building and managing mission-critical data pipelines with expertise in batch and streaming architectures.
• Strong knowledge of data engineering best practices including modeling, transformation, orchestration, and quality control.
• Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, preferably AWS ecosystem tools like Athena, S3, Kinesis, SQS, and SNS or close equivalents.
• Ability to create systems that are observable, testable, and straightforward to debug.
• A product-oriented mindset, valuing the purpose behind the development work.
• Comfort navigating ambiguous problems with pragmatic decision-making.
• A genuine passion for impact, curiosity, and eagerness to learn; an interest in agriculture is a bonus.
• Highly collaborative with excellent communication, humility, and knowledge sharing habits.
