Role Overview
The Senior Credit Underwriter is responsible for evaluating SME, Mid-Corporate, and Large Corporate lending applications that require manual underwriting within the Industry sector. The role ensures that lending aligns with the organization’s risk appetite and maintains loan loss targets. Collaborating closely with the Head of Credit Risk Analytics and Chief Risk Officer, the incumbent will periodically assess and establish lending limits and parameters that balance risk and support business growth objectives. Continuous innovation in risk assessment and opportunity identification is expected, leveraging data insights and professional expertise to manage the credit risk portfolio effectively.
This role involves cross-functional collaboration with Sales, Product, and Data Engineering teams to foster strategic product initiatives that drive organizational growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Promote and implement best practices for credit analysis, underwriting, and continuous monitoring, including liaising with Sales teams during initial lending discussions and preparing credit approval documentation for senior management or risk committee review.
- Conduct comprehensive reviews and due diligence of lending applications encompassing financial assessments, business projections, stress testing, and other critical analyses supporting high-value loan approvals.
- Monitor sector portfolio health through regular credit reviews and targeted deep-dives to evaluate performance.
- Lead efforts to enhance underwriting frameworks and strategic approaches.
- Engage continuously across multiple teams to advance credit risk maturity within the company.
- Support risk initiatives and pilot projects by analyzing credit data.
- Undertake periodic assessments of individual bad debts.
Required Qualifications and Experience
- Extensive experience in underwriting SME and Large Corporate loans, particularly within Nigeria’s financial industry sector, ideally from a leading financial institution.
- Deep knowledge of the full underwriting process for large-ticket loans up to 5 billion NGN.
- Expertise in financial evaluations of SMEs and large corporates using diverse data including audited financial statements and bank records.
- Thorough understanding of economic challenges and opportunities in the industry sector, with familiarity of relevant macroeconomic and regulatory landscapes.
- Proficient in risk mitigation through collateral and covenant assessment across both secured and unsecured loans.
- Strong familiarity with Nigerian compliance and regulatory frameworks.
- Demonstrated adherence to underwriting best practices and standards.
